Marshall named captain for NRL All Stars

Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall has today been named to replace Darren Lockyer as captain of the 2012 NRL All Stars side to play on February 4 on the Gold Coast.

As captain and also being the NZ skipper, the 2011 Golden Boot winner is an automatic selection in the 20-man NRL All Stars squad. In addition, following the retirement of Darren Lockyer, Storm captain Cameron Smith takes his place as the Australian team’s automatic selection.

The public now take on the role of selector and will vote on the 16 players to join Marshall and Smith. An additional two players will be selected by Bennett at the completion of stage two voting in January.

Fans have until December 23 to be a selector in the first stage of voting at [www.nrl.com/allstars](http://www.nrl.com/RepGames/AllStars/AllStarsVoting/tabid/11089/Default.aspx) for one of the greatest coaches in rugby league history. As in previous years, they must choose two forwards and two backs from each club to form a shortlist for Bennett to then refine his team for stage two of the voting.

Marshall said it was an honour to be chosen by Bennett to follow Lockyer as the 2012 NRL All Stars captain.

“I feel very privileged to be replacing Darren Lockyer as captain, in particular knowing that Wayne Bennett made the decision,” Marshall said.

“This game brings together some of the best players from across our game and the crowd are in for quite a match given the one-all draw. There is no question that both sides play with absolute intensity.”

Who are people getting behind to be the other Tiger in the team.

My vote goes to Ayshford, i want to see him get some recognition.

Country captains & VC's still get selected don't they?

I picked Woods and Ellis for the forwards and Lawrence/Ayshford at the back.

Tell you what, had a mongrel of a time trying to pick two decent backs for Souths… They're either not available because they're of aboriginal extraction or not worthy of All-Star selection.

On Benji though, congratulations to him. He's worthy of every accolade he receives and it's only fitting that it is passed on from a great like Locky to a future great in Marshall.
 
Vice captains don't get picked any more. Bennett gets to pick two players instead.

Congrats benji!! Shows his standing in the game as one of the best and most popular players

I agree. We know how Lawrence, Ellis, Blair & co. go playing rep footy. I would like to push the likes of Ayshord and Woods to give them a taste of the next level.

At the current level of voting Spartan, you have to vote for two forwards and two backs from each team, Bennett will narrow them down for the next round of voting, at least that's how I read it.

That's correct CT, two forwards and two backs from each team.

My votes went to Ayshford, Lawrence, Woods & Groat.

Another fine achievement by Benji so good he is a Wests Tiger, plenty to be proud of about the bloke :supporter:
 
Benji should me tigers captain!! He is already captain of his country and the all star team !! Pretty stupid that the nation team and a team full of all stars and best players in the world see him as there out right captain and he can't get the c next to his name here cause our captain at the tigers will have a cry !! At least co- captain !! But in saying that he already has everyone's respect at the club and everyone really knows who the leader is at tiger town!!!

I put my stage 2 votes in and went with Beau as the Tigers player - firstly bewcause I think he would bring some real personality, 2ndly he ahd a great season last year and also because our forwards in Blair and Ellis don't need another hard game. Lawrence doesen't need to be risked either.

Although the idea of Steward and Blair in the same 2nd row would be funny
 
If hope that Blair isnt the player chosen for us. He hasnt even played a game for us yet. I really wanted Ayshford.

My Round 2 vote will probably go to Ryan. Lawrence, Ellis and Blair already get rep jerseys, let Beau have a taste.
