Preview: Dragons v Wests Tigers
Liam Napier
VENUE & TIME: Win Jubilee Oval, Sunday May 22, 3.00pm
COVERAGE: Channel 9
HEAD TO HEAD: Played 20; Dragons 11, Wests Tigers 9
LAST TIME: Dragons 13 - Tigers 12 at ANZ Stadium, 2010.
WALKING WOUNDED:
The Tigers have endured more pain than most on the injury front this year. They are still missing centres Chris Lawrence and Geoff Daniela, winger Lote Tuqiri, exceptional English back-rower Gareth Ellis and prop Todd Payten - who's on the verge of retirement and has reverted to experimental stem-cell therapy to fix his dodgy knees.
Conversely, the Dragons welcome back Kiwi hooker Nathan Fien from a troublesome hamstring that kept him out for the past two matches. Don't be surprised if Fien starts ahead of Dean Young.
FORM:
Sitting four points clear of their closest rivals it's obvious the premiers are again the team to beat. They're in hot form, chasing nine consecutive NRL wins. Their only blip this season came when they took Cronulla lightly back in Round 2\. Impressive to say the least.
The Tigers have failed to hit their straps. Weakened Souths embarrassed Tim Sheens' men two weeks back and they produced a lucky escape over Penrith last week, after which the coach delivered a rocket. That result was just their third win in the last six weeks and they'll need to conjure somewhere near their best to run through the Dragons at home. Lingering thoughts of last year's grand final qualifier, when the sides last clashed, should provide some inspiration.
WHO'S HOT:
Darius Boyd will be buzzing from Queensland's Origin I success, but plenty of his team-mates will feel Wednesday's knocks more after being involved in a losing effort. It will be a big test for Jamie Soward. His forwards may be on the backfoot, suffering fatigue, and he too will be feeling the effects after his Blues' debut.
Blake Ashford will be out to make his 50th match for the Tigers a memorable one. If Robbie Farah, Benji Marshall and Wade McKinnon can combine to expose tiring Dragons' forwards, Ashford may just have his wish.
WE THINK:
With eight players involved in Origin, the Dragons are vulnerable. Backing up from the rigours of intense cross state rivalry is no mean feat. Saints have named an extended bench and will need the most out of Trent Merrin, Fien and Kyle Stanley if they are to break the club's winning record.
Wayne Bennett opted against resting his stars and no doubt has devised a plan to overcome fatigue, but the Tigers will fancy their chances. So they should, too. You don't get a better chance to get one over the premiers. But, the Tigers haven't produced of late and we just can't see them halting the Dragons' success. Dragons by 8.
