Matt Lodge New York thread

Some bloke just on the radio recline lodge is playing ng for St Pat's in the Penrith comp.
Fifitas team?
Is he allowed to play at all?

Would it depend on whether he was getting paid to play or he was amateur now ??

Even then I guess every player must be registered legally , in that case the NSWRL

Good question

How does inter-country litigation work? Is there a way to enforce the claims if Lodge does not reside in the US?

Not sure how it works.

We have a memorandum of understanding in relation to dealing with the United States, and Mutual Assistance Requests can be requested between governments when it comes to criminal matters. Not so sure about civil cases, but it wouldn't surprise me, otherwise the US Lawyers probably would have dropped the matter. Lodge's parents may be in for some hardship if this progresses further.

I'd say it would be fairly limited. US Courts like passing these kind of things with little prospect of collecting. Unless they can get at his assets they're not going to get much joy. It's not like Lodge is ever going to be allowed back in the states.

You can register a US civil judgment with Australian courts and then enforce it in the ordinary way. The courts have some discretion to refuse to register a foreign judgment but pretty much always do it for the US.

Mutual assistance and extradition considerations only arise in criminal matters.

Well if Junior Paulo can have a giggle playing subbies in Rah Rah why shouldn't Lodge get a run playing park footy, I presume it's all above board and has been approved, after all he has a massive bill to pay so keeping fit before a possible NRL reserrection is his only hope before being litigated till the cows come home, such great talent, sadly lacking in the grey matter.

I don't think it's as straight forward as you suggest particularly as Lodge wasn't a US national or resident.

Why would lodges parents have any liability?

He is an adult under our law and will just go bankrupt for a few years.

Yanks wasting their time imo

Are you serious? Yeah, he does have a massive bill to pay, why is that?

And i don't think he has to worry about keeping himself fit for the NRL. Not many, if any clubs will ever knock on his door again, nor should they.

St George came looking for Rusty Packer to add to their club. Its no certainty that a desperate club won't want to add Lodge to their playing roster.
Being a deadbeat means little these days, it is swept under the carpet and ignored by clubs in search of success.

Apparently back in the news http://www.zerotackle.com/fifita-backs-matt-lodge-to-make-return-to-nrl-22460/#aXFm2tfvA1JDpE8K.97

I will find it odd if the NRL ever consider allowing him back.

With such a fine character reference as Fifita, how could the NRL refuse?

Lodge in the papers again, declaring he can't pay any compensation to his victims. :unamused:
No surprise there. I wonder what happens next, if anything.
