Jared Maxwell will take on the NRL's toughest job as the game's referees' boss.Jared Maxwell was announced as the new man in charge of the NRL referees. The NRL confirmed on Wednesday that Maxwell would replace
Bernard Sutton in the role, after more than 275 NRL games, State of Origins and Test matches. But this could potentially be his toughest appointment.

Since Robert Finch stepped down at the end of 2010 after eight years at the helm, no less than five people have overseen the referees. Bill Harrigan and Stuart Raper shared the role until they were sacked at the end of 2012, while Daniel Anderson maintained it for the 2013 season only. Tony Archer then had five years at the top until he was axed, while Sutton's two years in charge have often been filled with drama.

Head of football Graham Annesley backed Maxwell to take over elite officiating and bunker operations. "Jared was a leading referee for over a decade, then transitioned to coaching second-tier referees," Annesley said.
"(He was appointed bunker manager last year and becoming a member of the match officials' appointments committee. "Jared knows our referees well and the referees know Jared well. "He understands the game and its clubs, but importantly has some innovative ideas to enhance the way our match officials prepare for a game."

Maxwell will be met with an immediate challenge, given the raft of rule changes announced this month and confirmation the one-referee system will stay.

"It's an honour to be appointed to such an important role," he said.
"Our match officials did an outstanding job last year adapting to the new rules and I'm looking forward to taking that to the next level in the 2021 season. "We all want to see fast, entertaining rugby league and I'll work closely with all officials to ensure the players are given every opportunity to achieve that."

Horsehead hey? Was incompetent as all get-up on the paddock.....can't say I'm filled with optimism that he'll be any good off of it. Jobs for the boys, would've preferred someone get appointed who hasn't been part of the hideous embarrassment that has been NRL refereeing shemozzle over the last 5-8 years.
Oh well, let the rorting continue I guess.

Just changing one useless incompetent joke for another,Annesley should also get punted he has been a disaster

Wasn't he behind a series of bunker howlers this year? You are kidding me, the greatest example of a boys club I have ever seen.

Nothing like failing your way up.
Maxwell’s current career highlight...

Horse head was terrible when he first started but IMO was one of the better ones when he stopped. Great to see the end of the Sutton mafia. Maybe we might see some other refs getting a crack instead of a Sutton

Matt Chechin is head and shoulders above the other boofheads. Apparently he's an NRL mental health advocate - an admirable undertaking - but the game needs him more to sort out the debacle which is NRL officiating. It's been a farce for way too long.

Hopefully Gezza Sutton has officiated his last big game now that his brother isn't in charge to gift him all the prime gigs. Hallelujah to that if so.
Would be great for the game if refereeing becomes more of an even-handed, non-biased art. Fingers crossed.

Our man Badge should have got the job, then we'd really be on a roll.

Are Badge and Horsehead besties ?
🤞

Im hoping the old adage "Those who cant do, teach" is apt here. The bloke was a crap referee that fell for every trick in the book and couldnt read a game.

Just what we need - another dope!!!!

He said " the referees did an outstanding job this year"

Says it all really - just wouldn't know, he needs to go before he starts and take Annersley with him.

How on Earth did this guy have the best CV of all the applicants?
It's like the NRL deliberately hires the worst possible person so they have someone to point the finger at.
