Meet the Wests Tigers
AJ Carr

Wednesday 30 January 2013 10:57 AM

Wests Tigers will visit the Southern Highlands this Sunday, February 3, for the Club's annual Community Carnival.

The Club is going all out to meet and interact with our Southern Highlands based fans and this is a great chance for you to get to know your favourite players and see how the team is shaping up for 2013.

The full NRL squad, with the exception of those with NRL All-Stars commitments, will host an open training session from 2.00pm at Mittagong Sports Ground, giving fans a first look at Mick Potter's side for the year.

After the open training session, you're invited to the 'Come and Try' family fun afternoon where you can hang out with players and try your hand at rugby league skills and drills.

Wests Tigers club legend Paul Sironen says the Club is excited about the opportunity to meet the fans with trial matches now just around the corner.

"We're encouraging you to come and see the boys as part of our Community Carnival," said Sironen.

"Come on out, meet the boys and grab a membership!"

FULL DETAILS:

Where: Mittagong Sports Ground

When: Sunday, 3rd February. 2:00-5:30pm

What: Open Training Session: 2:00-3:30pm
'Come and Try': 4:00-5:00pm

Will be going on Sunday, just a 5min drive for me to the oval, the swimming pool next to the oval might take the togs.

Hope many Highlands fans turn up to see a super RL team do their stuff, will be a great day.

Several Wests Tigers forwards were today given some valuable advice from the Club’s latest recruit in former Balmain Tigers legend Steve Roach.

The ex NSW and Australian Test prop has joined Wests Tigers in a Club Ambassador role. One of his roles is the establishment of ‘The Tribe’ – a new corporate group giving people the chance to get an inside view of how the Club runs and puts them in the shoes of the Wests Tigers players.

Limited to 17 Members only, The Tribe will be run by ‘Tribal Chief’ Roach and his former Tigers team-mate in Paul Sironen, the Club’s NYC Football Operations Manager.

In between his ‘Tribe’ work, Roach spent the morning passing on some of the finer techniques of playing in the front row at the invite of NRL Head Coach Mick Potter.

“Playing in the front row or in the middle is the easiest job to explain but the hardest one to do,’’ Roach said.

“It’s about getting over the opposition and about trying to be the best you can.

“It is no good just putting on the jumper and going through the motions and making up the numbers. You have got to try and make a statement.”

Not long got home from Mittagong. Great afternoon. The players were great with the kids. Got some quality photos. The players trained first, then did a quick recovery session and then took the kids through some drills.

The players were flogged in their training session. Skando and Luke Portese absolutely gave it to them! Talking to some of the players even they were surprised how hard it was. Adam Blair said this pre season was much harder than last year but something the players needed.

Players that impressed were Woods, Blair, Anasta, Pettybourne, BMM, Miller and a big guy I didnt know!

Players who didnt impress were Iosefa, Reddy and Utai. They could not keep up at all. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. I was there from start to finish.

Was a really good afternoon and the club should be proud of itself for that effort. Every player I saw made themselves available for as many photos and autographs as it took to keep everybody happy….and yeah that looked like a killer session they were put through.

Thought Anasta looked really fit, Bodene Thompson was getting stuck in at all times, and Tedesco's definitely bulked up.

No idea where Lote sits on the pre-season workload but he was really, really struggling with the cardio side of the run today.

IMO we are carrying players that I hope we offload ASAP…Reddy is a waste of space and surely can be offloaded to the Titans, Eels or Penrith...to hear Lote was struggling to keep pace is a worry and I can see his kick returns now....gets bashed and fumbles the ball(turnover)...

Hard aye as far as i know Joel Reddy is off contract this year so he will be gone and Lote Tuqiri will be his last year with us and a player that always gave his all Matt Utai will probably be gone this year so that will free up cash for us to recruit for the 2014 season.

Yes a great afternoons training session at Mittagong Oval, most players are looking really fit Braith Anasta really impressed me with his work, great to see players spending time with both fans and kids after training, the day was really worthwhile, I was sweating just watching their training routine.

Had a quick chat with David Nufoaloma yesterday, he's got another year in NYC if needed, but he's been training with the NRL squad all summer and is desperate to break into the team. With any luck he'll be one internal option that Mick Potter doesn't have to go out of the club to fill once Tuiquiri hangs is boots up.

It was a great afternoon at Mittagong - the players were great with the kids both after training, and doing the drills with the kids. Its great the club is spending the time and effort getting out into the community on days like this. Does anyone make anything of the groups doing the training - one with most of the starting players then the other with mostly fringe guys - except for Liam and BMM? Lote was blowing big time during training, though he said afterwards it wasn't too bad!

I felt a bit sorry for Marika - I think he was overwhelmed with the attention. Who is the big guy in the photo? He is dead set massive, hope he gets a good run.

Is it Taqele Naiyaravoro? You're right he was a big unit, and was leading from the front in all the shuttle runs.

**8\. Thompson**

Bodene Thompson at prop is an interesting one. Looking forward to seeing how he goes in the trials.

Thanks for the feedback. That's excellent to hear of our front and second rowers impressing. We lacked in that area last year, looking forward to the trial matches.
Shame to hear about Reddy, Utai and Iosefa but they aren't part of the run-on side which is a plus.

A couple of interesting groups there B&W. I would have penciled in BMM and Pettybourne for the top 17, but hey, it's early days and the trials should tell us more, which by the way, the Tigers should name a squad this week to play the Panthers…
