MELBOURNE RESPOND TO MCKINNON MEDIA STORM

No one can claim to know the mind of Smith, except himself, at the time of the incident. You don't know for sure if he realised how seriously in trouble McKinnon was, because such outcomes are so rare. Doesn't matter what other people said or thought.

Most of us don't know the bloke personally either. I would like to think, as with any decent human being, that if he knew the true seriousness of the event he would have reacted a bit better.

But this was an tragedy and an accident, and the peripheral behaviour of those after the accident is really meaningless at this current time. It doesn't help McKinnon or the game. There is little benefit pointing fingers or casting stones any more, in relation to this accident.

Best thing is to support everyone involved to the best extent possible, and move on.

It's one thing that Smith carried on the way he did at the time of the injury. It's another that more than a year later he still hasn't contacted Alex with an apology. Especially
when he obvioualy now knows the seriousness of the injury.
Speaks volumes of his character.

It's been mentioned 5 times in this thread that contact has been repeatedly made, but McKinnon declined. Not to mention the amount of money Smith has made for McKinnon by launching the rise for Alex round.

Well said Sabre.

I'm surprised that even when this was aired on 60 minutes that he just didn't come out and say, "I'm sorry, on the day I put my job above what was a life-changing event of a young man. I realize that life is far more important than a footy game and I apologize. I want to wish Alex and his family all the best in his recovery and will be determined each year to continue raising funds for his ongoing rehabilitation". That would be the end of it and Smith would be respected again.

Even if he has tried to contact in the past via what ever means, he should have send a text, email or publicly apologized. Something that Alex could read when he felt emotionally stable enough to do so. Putting someone in a position with an on the spot with a phone call (if attempted as suggested) is not the right way to go about it. If it were me, I would feel guilty and want to rectify it.

Instead, he has come out and said he is "shocked" and got his club to release a statement. That's again a cold response.

The Australian captain should be better.

Personally I think it was a wonderful story.
Pretty sure it was an hours show, maybe 10-15 mins on Cam Smith.

Imo it was a story about LOVE. His fiancée Teagan pretty much saved his life by sticking by his side and providing hope, love and support. Who ever posted above that he cornered her in the public eye to propose - you obviously haven't experienced real love and I find it ignorant to post such a thing.

On Cam Smith - it was poor form and somewhat arrogant imo. It was blatantly obvious Alex was seriously hurt. Have we heard him repeat "if he didn't roll his head….". NO!
He realised pretty quickly that was out of line (the tackle was illegal).

Wether he did or didn't, or has or hasn't tried to contact Alex, if it was me I'd be making arrangements to meet Alex (after Origin) and just get it all out. Cameron simply has to accept it wasn't his best moment and appreciate how that would anger Alex and his family. A genuine apology would go a long way. There's no excuse not to contact Alex now, albeit somewhat late. He's just gotta do it imo.

Best of luck to Alex and Teagan in the future. May they live a long and loving life together.

smith is a grub and has been since the storm got caught with the salrey cap stuff, he thinks he is bigger than the game. he needs to get off his high horse and go and see alex, but then he is the golden child.

I'm usually all for the cam smith bashing. After all he is indeed the biggest con man in the game.
However I am really having trouble understing the importance of smith having to see or contact Alex. Cameron wasn't even involved in the tackle. Nothing he said or did contributed in any way towards mckinnons situation then or now.
Did smith carry on like an arrogant twit. Yep sure did.
Should he have shut up while he was ahead? (and a ruling of penalty- on report was definitely ahead) Absolutely!
But he didn't cause the injury and the mckinnon family although understandably angry ,shouldn't be looking for a bad guy to blame.

I do hope smith gets flattened on Wednesday night though. .. Legally ofcourse.

I would compare it to when the twits kept shouting during the minute silence in the recent Origin. The general public were outraged, and rightly so. You could say the fools did nothing wrong, they didn't hurt anyone, they were just in the heat of the moment - the cauldron of Origin. But most people took offence and suggested they be sought out and banned.

Now add the fact McKinnons family is more effected than the large majority of people who condemned those idiots at origin. Sure he didn't physically cause any injury, but Smith was being insensitive at the WORST possible time. The difference is that he is an Australian Captain and needs to be held in an even high regard than twits shouting during a minute silence.

An apology is not a hard thing to do when you have a microphone when you need it.

Smith will probably take legal action

On what grounds? What he said on the field is there on film for all to hear, he can't deny it. He is already widely recognised as a dog of a bloke, McKinnon didn't reveal anything groundbreaking there.

a good read.

the more i think about it.. the more i start disliking alex mckinnon and 60 minute's "journalism"
the video by pHyre also puts it all in perspective.

i honestly admire alex's courage.. on placements and at uni, we've seen and read a lot about people with SpC injury- it's definitely tough. if i was in his situation, i would definitely have started hating everyone, pushing everyone away and overall had a very bad look on life. but alex has honestly received so much support- no one with an injury like his has probably ever received the support he has. further, he's had a long time to think about everything, re assess everything. i actually dont think the most damage was done with the lifting but when the other 2 tacklers put their weight on alex- that's when imo most of the injury happened. he definitely ducked his head but it may have just been a reflex.

it was an illegal tackle but before his injury- there must've been a hundered of those every year and it's unfortunate. he knew the risks of playing this sport. if i ride a motorbike and a car pulls out without seeing me- yes i'm going to hate that bastard for life but i've been taught ways to make sure that doesn't happen and i know the risks when i ride my bike.

cant believe im saying this but i really feel sorry for smith atm. he was just doing what he always does and trying to protect his team and teammates. you can't possibly know straight away that alex would've been paralysed in the first 5 minutes. hope mclean and everyone involved receive the support- it's unfortunate that out of a dozen tackles like these every week, his is the one that had such an impact on a person.

keep fighting alex, but please think twice before saying stuff in the media- your words have an effect on people as well. it's not like you haven't done an illegal tackle before..

not on mckinnon- on 60 minutes and ch9 for defamation "arguing with the ref for 80 minutes", "hasn't attempted to contact alex" etc. very one sided and FALSE

This video clearly proves Alex McKinnon is full of crap in his 60 minute interview singling out Cameron Smith. Plus the camera was focused on Smith a couple of times and their was genuine looks of concern on his face.

@russelldp - Maybe you should watch this clip - It completely unravels what McKinnon says to 60 minutes.

If I was Cameron Smith I'd be considering Legal action - it's effectively slander.

that was an amazing part of the story but those low life scumbags wanted to sell their story and inserted crap about smith. completely uncalled for and if anything THEY need to apologise to smith for that.

it's their fault that you won't hear most people talk about the good bits and focus on the negativity.

i can understand alex's negativity- he's still bitter and he has the right to be bitter with everybody for the rest of his life (which in itself is pretty unhealthy) but 60 minutes trying to make this a victim vs villain issue is simply not on. pathetic really.

There was a video today posted elsewhere showing the Storm/Knights game the yr before showing McKinnon high fiving as Jesse Bromwich lay on the ground with a broken jaw.

I'm no medical specialist but a broken jaw ain't a broken neck. Did it also show him protesting with the referee that it was Bromwichs fault and not the tacklers? I dare say not, that is the whole issue here.

Very True, but in both instances, none of the players are aware of the severity.

Further more, if this was the case, its obvious the competitive nature of professional athletes is the same. Win at all costs!

Ahh but if a Storm player was standing over someone with a broken jaw high fiving his teammates it would be an issue.

I've watched your "smoking gun" clip and saw 60 Minutes.

It was the first time Mckinnon had seen the footage and quite naturally, he felt disgusted that Smith was arguing about it being a penalty. That's it… You're obviously a fan of Smith, but your beef is with 60 Minutes, not poor Alex. All he said was words to the effect of "are you kidding me?"

You defend Smith as being unfairly treated, but in the process, relentlessly cast wicked, cruel and abhorrent aspersions on the character of Alex McKinnon.

Feel free to type what you want mate, but Id hate to think the general public, media or children (mine included) might scroll through a WT forum and see someone expressing such ignorant views without challenge.

Over and out.
