Memo Ray Hadley..

It was a battle of the spoon. There is only so many times a commentator can call " and he's lost the ball" before the general league fan will start flicking channels. I don't like Hadley/ warren but it must be hard to remain interested and enthusiastic about calling a train wreck.

I really don't like Ray's commentary style. His role is to commentate the game and too often he sounds like he wants to be the centre of attention. I would prefer channel 9 find someone else for his role. I don't mind if someone mispronounces a name but to make fun of it is awful. The speed of which a law suit would come at you if you made fun of hadley in a similar fashion would make Usain Bolt look like John Goodman.

His abuse of ben roberts performance, among other players, last night was unprofessional. His noticable increase in volume when Hayne touched the ball and did nothing exceptional was also ridiculous. Lets not talk about the lollies either…

You only have to look at how Mike Carlton's pieces on hadley have been edited to see what he truly is.

To the tigsta, I guess you either were not listening to the audio or don't understand what is unacceptable or unprofessional.

Why is Ava's last name pronounced with a 'n' sound? I thought the commentators were getting it wrong initally, but dont think so anymore. Woulda though it was seumanufaGai with a hard g. Or is that how g's are pronounced by Maori's. Kind of like the obvious, WHakatane

This can extend to Anthony Maroon on Triple M last night. He continually pronounced Seumanufagai's surname as

See-you-manu-fang-eye…made it sound like fungi at times.

Well how would you pronounce it?

I think this is a rubbish thread in my opinion. I don't think they are offensive at all. I also think they pronounce the names as they are advised.
I think some people have run out of trash talking the tigers they gotta start having a go at the commentators for name pronunciation?
Please.

Dude, log in and stop using "Guest" to hide behind.

Hadley is a mug, and should not be calling Parra games, as he cannot be impartial due to being a hardcore Parra supporter. Similar to Wally Lewis and any of the 3 Qld teams!

Don't fkn blame me for the site not showing my login name. When im on my iphone IT DOESNT FKN WORK. but you know what, I DONT CARE. Don't be a keyboard warrior and accuse me of hiding. Ask for my name and I will give it to you….... USERNAME - TIGSTA.

now back to my question. Point out a time he was offensive. And tell me how you correctly pronounce Ava's surname. Don't get it wrong mate or you'll be accused of being racist / offensive.

You think you could cut out the swearing then?

I don't worry too much about the pronunciation, but can't stand his voice at all, let alone putting up with it for a game of league.

Oh how I miss the dulcet tones of Andrew Voss. Our loss, and NZ's gain.

Ava is Samoan, not Maori

Samoans will always have a G that sounds like 'ng' as in seumanufagai, fa'alogo, lagi setu etc.

Pretty sure Tagatese is being pronounced wrong, should be Tangatese, but I might not be right on that

If its spelt out ng then they are most likely Tongan. Ie mosese pangai is Tongan I suspect

The above would be true in 99.9% of cases but don't take it as an absolute rule

Whakatane is actually pronounced 'faka', there are heaps of Tongan words starting in 'faka' and I think 'fa'a' is the Samoan equivalent

As for Hadley… He's the worst commentator in a long time. Him and rabs have already made their jokes about Ava's name when he made his debut in rd 3, pretty sure he should be over it by now

I think the name should be pronounced soo or syoo manufangai, definitely not see-you in 2 syllables

If they were smart (they aren't) they would've just stuck with 'big Ava'

Spot on mate. You've pretty much got all of that right - 'g' is like how the 'NG' is prounounced in SiNGapore, so variations of that for each of the vowels are NGa, NGo, NGe, NGi, NGu - vowels are pronouced slightly differently too by the way.

Culturally in Māori and Pacific Island nations it's a sign of respect IF ONE TAKES THE TIME to correctly pronounce their name. With the proliferation of Pacific and Māori players playing it's not too much to ask is it. Rabs butchers names as well and sadly he jokes about it. Not good form from him either!
