MEMO to Benji: man-up in defence

BENJI is still soft as they come in defence and unfortunately hasn't hardened up over the years.

During the week Potter alluded to how Benji needs to improve his defence. The criticism is justified.

Benji pick your act up and stick the shoulder in. No more of this arm grabbing you are an embarrassment to yourself. Man up, acknowledge your defensive deficiencies and shift out to the wing if need be. At least that way you'll be able to add a bit of value to the team and have a better chance of defusing bombs than Utai.

Let's hope Potter can fix this otherwise we'll continue to have second rowers scoring tries at will whenever they are attacking inside our 20.

Man up Benji your supposed to be one of the leaders.

The head on shot of his effort - or non effort rather - in Guerras try was pretty damning…..then his kick off after that reached the 20 which saw their eventual 5th tackle on our 30m = not god enough

I dont know why NRL Clubs persist with having thier greatests attacking weapons in the defensive line if they cant tackle… It only gives the forwards a target to run at.

Maybe its time to bring back the floating 2nd line defender???

No…they all play channels/corridors now
He does it good in broken play though....which happens often with us, which is why I can see you may have thought we still play an old fashioned lock type role

benji has to improve and dedicate himself to improving.

but so do our backrow.
the first try was on bodene for not getting into position in the line.left way to big of a gap and isolated benji with 3 runners.
fulton read the play wrong on 2 other trys.
our backrow is responsible for alot of scores over the last 2 years with players going right through them or leaving outside backs on an island.

I had a lot of critics when I went against the 'yes men' of the forum and said Benji is not was he is cracked up to be…His defense is as poor as it gets and another reason why he should either take a pay cut so we can sign someone that can help us win a premiership or get rid of him altogether.

yeah Guerra went straight between Fulton and Benji for that try

I recall Benji putting a good traditional 'shoulder' tackle on one of the Roosters big men? Does anyone recall who it was? Early in the game I think, straight after a kick off [maybe their first try]

I dont think Benji's defence was any better in 2005?
I think he just needs good defenders standing on each side of him. Its obvious opposition teams are going to run at him as often as possible.
This is the tigers weakness they dont have enough top notch defenders. Too many missed tackles. maybe its a lack of fitness or too many errors in attack burning them out.

i dont have that big a footy brain but i really think, the only way we can work on our weakness is for benji to CONSTANTLY keep running out of the line and put pressure on ball players or centres.

his on the line defense is terrible. it's better to leave a hole in defense and try cover tackling than to have shirt grabbers there

Ayshford blamed himself for that try on WTV.

he can blame himself all he wants, but the link in the chain was already broken by then.he stays out he goes inside,if he comes in the half goes to the trailing 5/8 and it's 2 on 1 against the winger.
the structure was the problem.
