Michael Jennings could yet end up at the Wests Tigers

NSW Origin centre Michael Jennings is still firmly in the mix at the Wests Tigers, ensuring a nervous summer for Blake Ayshford.

Despite Tigers officials believing Ayshford is about to revive the form that had him tipped as a Kangaroo bolter two years ago, there is no ironclad guarantee he will be there next year despite having a three-year contract.

The Jennings domino could have an impact on five clubs, with Parramatta, the Tigers, Warriors and St George Illawarra all interested in him.

His former coach Matt Elliott has a high opinion of Jennings and would love to take him to the Warriors, while the Panthers centre was one of Ricky Stuart's best in Origin last season.

Jennings' future at Penrith is uncertain thanks to a $650,000-per-season contract. Should the Tigers land him, Ayshford would be the likely casualty ahead of fellow centre Chris Lawrence.

Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell yesterday threw support behind 24-year-old Ayshford, who only last year extended his contract until the end of 2015.

"The only people talking about Blake leaving are in the media," McDonnell said. "No one here has said anything about him going.

"He's contracted for another three years and we expect him to be here. Obviously you can never say what's going to happen in the future, but we expect Blake to be playing for Wests Tigers in 2013."

The news on Ayshford comes as Tigers officials prepare to rubber stamp Mick Potter as coach.

Potter is expected to be on around $250,000 a year. One of his first jobs will be to revive the form of players such as Ayshford.

Bursting into the NRL with a try on debut against Brisbane in 2009, the centre was almost thrown into the Australian squad two years later. However, this season he struggled as the Tigers failed to make the finals.

"No, Blake didn't have a great year, but he wasn't alone," McDonnell said. "The fact is he's a great first-grade centre with size, speed and a great footy brain."

While Panthers general manager Phil Gould has said Jennings will be with his club next year, it's no secret that they need to cut at least one player from their version of the big four: Jennings, Tim Grant, Lachlan Coote and Sam McKendry.

I hope not dont get me wrong Jennings is a good player BUT at the sort of money being reported we could get 2 good first graders

Jennings is better than "good".
Are suggesting that we should just settle for 2 role players? We have enough "good" role players, we should get someone awesome now. If he behaved, Jennings is perfect IMO.

Under a new coach like Potter I still believe Ayshford has plenty to offer, possible locking the scrum or in the back row. Blake's built like a backrower and in my books his career was heading in that direction anyway.

But I must admit having a potential centre pairing of Lawrence and Jennings is too good to pass up. Fingers crossed!?!

I agree with you entirely. It would a great shame if Tigers let Ayshford go. He seems to be a very level headed youngster who will continue to improve. If he doesn't play centre he has the strength and speed to slot in very well as a backrower. Jennings coming to Tigers would be the icing on the cake. With Potter in charge he will need to work hard to work on his discipline both on and off the field. Big year for Tigers if it falls into place.

Must be a slow news day at the DT once again. I'd like to see what Jennings could do running off Benji, but I just can't see him at the Tigers next year.

Give Ayshford another year I reckon - **I think Jennings in the team would be against the "NO DH" Rule….**

I've never seen this rule talked about anywhere besides this forum. Never heard it mentioned by any player

The only team i've ever heard who have been open about the ''NO DH'' rule are the Swans

Jennings is a great player and would look good in our backline but his asking price would be too high, especially for a centre. Money reserved for Jennings should be used on our spine, firstly Farah and then Miller and Tedesco will need healthy uprades next year if they are showing form.

I'd hate to sign Jennings and lose one of our spine because we didn't have room under the salary cap

Ashyford had an ordinary year, yes, but we've all seen his potential and without Sheens playing musical chairs and a new coach with fresh ideas I'm confident he can get back to his best.

It sure would be nice to have Jennings but surely its more important to secure the services of our currant roster and sort out the coaching issues and add some stability to the group rather than getting ahead of ourselves in signing a big name. Wouldnt the coach have a lot of input into any player aquisitions so why would we chase Jennings with no coach. I just cant see anything happening untill we have officialy named a new coach.

With comments like that you have effectively ruled yourself out of ever getting a job at the Wests Tigers.
Logic, common sense and forward planning not on our watch mate.

Lets sign Lewis, Lets sign Jennings, Lets sign Kite….ooops um We have to let players go ...salary cap problems.

What a joke.. is this an under 12's club or an NRL club ?

If his head is in the right place and he gels with marshall and lawrence then he good be a gun signing for WT
