Missed Tackles - Wests Tigers

The two best defenders are in Reserve Grade.

Elijah Taylor and Aaron Woods are probably the two best defensive players we have. Taylor for his work rate, line speed, cover defence and work in the ruck and Woods for his work in the wrestle - he's good at turtling players.

Farah has a great work rate but doesn't dominate tackles enough to be regarded as our best defender (in my opinion).

So true….there are tackles and there are tackles, just like there are missed tackles and there are miss tackles. When they do the stats, a third man in Hindmarsh flop gets the same score as a bloke who makes heavy direct contact and drops a charging forward in their tracks. Just like a fullback gets credited with a miss tackle when he is on his Pat Malone with three guys coming at him and he has to choose what guy to go for and makes a wrong call

I've missed a few players completely, and the Telstra site has been updated since Love The West Tigers put his figures up. These are the ones who played 80 minutes or more:

BACKS
Hunt 133% (played 80 min made 3 missed 4)
Brooks 39
Tedesco 37
Rankin 27
Moses 24
Nofoaluma 22
Milone 20
Chee-Kam 17
Naiqama 15
Littlejohn 15
Simona 12
Addo-Carr 10

FORWARDS
Lawrence 8%
Cherrington 8
Halatau 6
Sironen 6
Taylor 5
Woods 5
Sue 5
Aloiai 4
Lovett 4
Grant 3
Felise 3
Seumanufagai 3
Farah 2

With only 34 minutes Liddle didn't make the list but made 19 tackles and missed zero, so I'm looking forward to seeing him next year. Aloiai and Felise are standouts from a future point of view, as would have been Addo-Carr who played 485 minutes, made 46 tackles and only missed five, promoting him to the best defender of our backs.

Of course it's all about defence and not statistics. JT is currently on 43% and running second last of the 16 coaches with 57 wins from a total of 132 NRL games coached. Trent Barrett is closing on him fast and could get to 42% with a win tonight. JT is improving though, and has 8 wins from 18 this year for 44%, so we mustn't be too hard on him.

who are the two best defenders?

i think the reference was of Robbie and Sirro

Robbie misses an average of 1 tackle a game so far in 2016 and Curtis 1.7

Brooks 5
Moses 4.2

Ok let's play Robbie at halfback and sironen at 5/8th
Dear me

You argue a point like an uneducated person .

For your information, Robbie has played at 7 and Curtis 5/8 over their career
Dig their stats and see how many tackles they missed whilst playing these positions

You clearly missed the point in the post.

Were you born yesterday ?

Best thing about Brooks' defence over last few weeks has been the low down contact rather than bouncing off bigger blokes up top.

hahahaha. I suspect if you looked at Siro's missed tackles at the same stage of his career as Moses and Brooks, they would be no better. Siro was a terrible defender until 12 months ago.

Defense is one of those things that players are rarely good at when they first come into grade. There are a number of reasons for this which includes the maturity of their body shapes.

But different defending in the middle, as Farah does, to defending out wide like Brooks and Moses. The middle requires very little decision making and you very rarely get isolated by big men as you have big men around you to help out. I think you would find Farah would have just as many missed tackles if he defended on the edge like Brooks and Moses.

Finally, some sense.
Thank you

Our scramble has been really good and our defence is improving as our combinations gel and our young guys get stronger and more experienced.

Farah doesn't tackle he hangs on.
