Moltzen at 7 = 6 from 6!

I got what you were saying and I wasn't suggesting that Moltzen won us the game. I'm saying that the guy knows how to play halfback and looks comfortable there. I personally think he played the perfect game given what was in front of him. Lui is a talent but he's still finding his feet and Moltzen is just not a _complete_ fullback. His attack is great, but he is shaky when it comes to kicks and his positioning can be left wanting at times and he certainly doesn't provide the go forward at the back that Beau tonight.

I guess I'm saying that this is the best possible combination with our current crop of players pending Tuiaki's return.

1\. Ryan
2\. Tuqiri
3\. Ayshford
4\. Lawrence
5\. Tuiaki
6\. Marshall
7\. Moltzen

You know I'm right….

I thought Moltzen had a poor game compared to what he can do but you win the argument.

Another thing to mention is that Beau at 1 changes his value as a player completely. At wing he's interchangeable. At fullback, and I know it's early days, but he's irreplacable if he plays like that every week.

Come on, we played well but you can hardly say Moltz at 7 made a difference. Lets be serious people.

it did southern , because it allowed ryan to play a better fullbacks role ….200 metrs speaks for itself .......

Why do you hate him there so much? He put on a try for ayshford, gave great service to the backs and defended well. The subtle way he went about his job made it easier for Benji and co to rip and tear.

I dont hate him there at all and thought he did nothing wrong. However, to suggest his inclusion at 7 as opposed to say Lui being there was the difference is rubbish.

I actually thought his passing was a bit laboured. He threw quite a balls behind Benji

Its not rubbish mate he is that good of a player that he must be in the side. If not at half, where he seems a lot more comfortable with his role, then he goes to fullback where he becomes a liability.
It's unfortunate for Lui but if Sheens doesnt change things then I cant see him playing top grade again this year…barring injury of course.

One gets the feeling that Ryan was only going through the motions even. Just work, work, work from Beau. I reckon he could run 200 fullbacks metres in his sleep. He's our fullback and if Sheensy can't see it, he's a moron.

Have to disagree…Moltzen is the best option at 7 in this team....

This win belongs to the Forwards.....

In fact Moltzen kick more Benji kick less...Moltzen needs to take control there...but hey it's Benji Marshall...who' wouldn't give him the ball...

I have to say that I felt moltzen was quiet, he wasn't bad, he was just solid. He played exactly the same game lui has been playing, solid defensive, solid passing and taking some kicks to alleviate pressure off benji and farah. To me the real difference was moltzen wasn't at fullback.

I think moltzen is too good a player to be on the bench but is wasted at fullback. I think he plays half well but is no better than Lui. Honestly I think we would best be suited with him in the centres and blake at lock (though most likely next year when ayshford fills out). Lui cops a pounding for playing a game like that and not being the game breaker yet moltzen plays the same game and its all praise for the kid. I dont mind which is half, but I think we need to support either of them as they are both talented.

Moltzen was solid tonight. However at halfback he is not as explosive as he is atacking from fullback and chiming in when he sees fit…its a shame that his defence and positional play isnt up to scratch to play fullback in the NRL. At this point in time for the sake of team balance Moltzen must remain in the 7.

I actually didnt think he was that quiet, maybe at times his involvement was so subtle that some of you felt he didnt do much, as Geo said, he led our kick chase all night long and came up with some good defense. It's hard to look outstanding when you have Benji next to you going ballistic.
He was very safe and complemented Benj perfectly.
He also chimed in with a try assist.
Not bad really, and he will improve if given the chance.

if rob lui played there we wuld have lost

Could have sworn I saw him playing in the win over Manly…
But then again we can't win games with Lui at 7 right? Must have been someone else...

I guess the beauty of dumb statements like this is its impossible to prove one way or an other though.

I reckon Moltzen looks a lot more dynamic than Lui and plays a different style to Lui. Dig up some tapes of the games where Moltzen played halfback last year. He tore teams to ribbons.

You can't judge a performance on linebreaks and tries alone. Although that is a feature of his game, is performance tonight was understated which is why it was so good. He played 2nd fiddle to Marshall and Farah and that is exactly what was needed because Farah and Marshall were handling the job just fine on their own. We didn't need another Chief out there.

At 7, Moltzen > Lui
At 1, Ryan > Moltzen

I'm not bagging anybody or picking on your post in particular, you just made an interesting point about Lui.

Moltzen did perform well on the kick chase and I agree his performance was understated. I do however think that Lui did exactly the same role against manly and for 1 half against the roosters (injury ruining the other) and the result was he got blasted on this board. I was at the games last year where moltzen played and he did do well at half, I just think Lui does the same job as well. Either way I'm not fussed which of the two is in number is the 7, as I think both are suited for the role and will do an equally good job. I am however glad moltzen isn't fullback as whilst he is a great attacking fullback (except on kickreturns) I think the rest of his fullback game is weak.

Nice post. I think we're basically on the same page. Moltzen did play a similar game to Lui tonight and I see what you're saying.

It's positive that we have all this talent and depth in the one position!

I watched those games last weekend and I am sorry to say that Tim didnt cut them to ribbons. Tim is a good footy player and should be proud of his performance tonight. We will do well with him at halfback. However, lets not get carried away. The win tonight was on the back of a dominant forward performance and some smart play by Marshall and Farah. Tim put in a nice kick for Blake's try.
