Moltzen mans up without Marshall

Tim Moltzen has never played halfback without Benji Marshall alongside him, but his record at No.7 suggests he could make a permanent move into the halves.

The Wests Tigers have won 10 of their 14 games with Moltzen at halfback, but against Brisbane at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday night, Moltzen will have to do it on his own.

He has spent most of his career at fullback but is no stranger to the halves, having played plenty of junior footy as a playmaker. He had been earmarked as the Tigers' long-term No.7 when he guided the club to five straight wins alongside Marshall in 2009, but former coach Tim Sheens saw him best suited at fullback.

However, injuries to Marshall and Braith Anasta have forced new coach Mick Potter to reshuffle, with Moltzen and Curtis Sironen handed the challenge of taking on Brisbane's experienced halves duo of Peter Wallace and Scott Prince.

''It felt pretty good,'' Moltzen said of the move after training. ''There's some things to work on, but it felt good and comfortable. It's not a new position to me. We'll try and get back to basics, directing the team around and try to let young Siro work his magic.''

In Moltzen's first five games at halfback in the NRL, the Tigers went on a five-game unbeaten streak, including a 54-20 thrashing of South Sydney in his debut appearance at halfback back in round 17 of 2009.

While Moltzen's move to halfback is a solution to their injury woes, it has also given Potter the opportunity to move James Tedesco into his favoured fullback position. Tedesco, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in his debut game in round one last year, has been playing on the wing this year before earning selection for City Origin in the No.1 jersey after Jarryd Hayne withdrew from the match.

With senior voices Marshall and Anasta missing through injury, Moltzen understands a lot of responsibility falls on his shoulders to ensure the team follows the game plan.

''It's just about having the authority and speaking up when you need to, especially for the big boys,'' he said. ''When we get tired, we probably get a little bit lost. It's about sticking to the structure and getting the boys to where we need … so we can execute the plays.''

Meanwhile, the club has signed Pat Richards on a two-year contract from next year. Richards was a member of the 2005 Wests Tigers premiership side, but left the club that year to join Wigan.

Moltz what do you mean speaking when you need to ??

Halfbacks and fullbacks should almost lose their voices during a game ,they should never shut up

Thats what a halfback main responsibility should be ,organizing his pigs and then listening for 1 or 6's calls

Looking for the whole team to MAN UP we have a shocking record against the Broncs at Campbelltown. There should be a big crowd at the ground tonight winning this game would be a big plus in many ways.

That was quite a forgettable period, that bit where everyone wets themselves about or winning streak with him at 7….couldnt fathom why I couldnt really recall it

Just looking, 4 teams (12th, 13, 15th, 16th) of the five didnt make the 8, Manly did (who we beat by one with a farah f/g) but were out in week one

Souths were another win (they came 10th)

Just sayin'

I was saying that for years and was shouted down by the mob on here for not joining the Moltzen bandwagon.

How times have changed. I now have more time for Tim than most on this forum.

Not too keen on moltz as a long term halfback, his 10/14 record is pretty good but I feel like he wont live up to the lofty expectations of some on the forum.

Good choice for this week though considering the injury toll and we'll see how he goes!

Moltz wasn't exactly setting the world on fire tonight at halfback before his injury. Hate to say it but it may be a blessing in disguise….now Potter will be forced to give some young, hungry bloke an opportunity to prove himself.
Bad luck to Tim though, hope his recovery goes well.

This injury could see the end of him. Some players take longer then others to recover from a knee reconstruction and Timmy was fit and confident this season.

What game were you watching? He was doing fine

i think he'd really settled in towards the end.
He certainly looked better than any other option this year

I guess you are just one of those that are going to hate him regardless.
I'm not his biggest fan but he's been good all year. credit where credit is due.

He looked to be in absolute exruciating pain, writhing in agony….I thought from where we we sitting he copped an accident elbow from Hodges....thought his jaw was busted or dislocated a hip

Just before Utais try - it wasnt real clear on TV - he was tackled the play before the try and his head hit the turf so hard....he got smashed last night poor bugger. Not up to it Im afraid.

He was woeful mate. I hate saying that given his injury. If you think that was fine, you are kidding yourself. I am not a Moltzen critic so dont try and make out i am not objective.

Miller may not be the complete package and is probably not the long term answer but he looked far better than that in all his games.

haha yeah have to agree the poor little bugger is NOT a first grade footballer.I 'd be very surprised if ever he plays grade again .

yeah I tend to agree ink. He got absolutely manhandled in that tackle and looks like a boy trying to play against the men, but the point being that with Moltzen out of the play after that tackle, Farah slotted in to half and we scored.

I was sitting really close to where Moltz did his knee again and to see anybody in that much pain is quite distressing, I can only hope the guy can recover successfully from it enough to lead a normal life away from the football field.

And who was first reciever …........ Tedesco The scary thing is we looked to have the most cohesion when Farah and Fulton were at 7 and 6 respectively

I'm not suggesting we should go with that pairing , but thats very concerning with the halves dilemna we now face

I would think that everyone would hope he makes a full recovery from his injury it was obvious that he was in agony last night.however having said that i dont believe that he is a first grade footballer and i would hope that he decides to retire rather than risk the same result in the future
