Moltzen's fullback hopes given a boost

Ease up on Moltzen will you, if for no other reason than he is one of ours!!

The kid, and I mean KID, has just had a season ending serious knee injury just over 12 months ago. An injury mind you, that few of us in here could ever hope to recover from let alone return to top grade footy!!!

On top of that, he has been forced to play fullback, wing, halfback, hooker, five eight and now left centre, and the season is only 10 games old.

Now, can someone here tell me that what this kid is being put through is a great rehabilitation plan?

And next week, lets just have a look at Terry Campese from the Raiders. Coming back from a seious knee injury as well, and I bet he isn't first grade standard for at least 10 weeks, and he will be playing the same position every week!!!

Here we go with some observations in this thread about Moltzen…'scared', 'physically weak',' never passes' , ' lacks physical courage', 'doesn't threaten the line'
Fair enough- if you don't think he's playing well make your point,
In response to NEVER passing the ball and doesn't THREATEN the line it is easy to point out he has passed the ball to set up tries and broken the line to score them (yes- this year!).
Most of the scared stuff comes from him not contesting one bomb that in all likelihood he thought would bounce over the dead ball line .
He's not the first and won't be the last player to do that.
If anyone seriously thinks you would find a coward running onto the field in the most elite competition , in arguably the toughest game on the planet , after a knee reconstruction and that coward is named Tim Moltzen - then you seriously have to consider if you know anything about rugby league or anything about men.

Seeing I brought it up with my chat with CK Just wondering what others think ?? Moltzen I think he is still carrying issues with the injury whether it be physical or mental . I understand what others are saying with him being played out of position , not in his right position etc But his actions say something different . Moving in a straight line he seems fine but all other movements seem timid or tentative . Anyone else want to give an opinion ??

People here seem to have very short memories
Moltz is champion player who should be named at halfback

He has so much potential..honestly if he can get back to that form I'll take him over Robert Lui..moltz was definitely one of my favorite players in 09..

We havent seen him move like that this year.
Absence does dim the memory a bit….I'd like to see him get a crack at 7, but facts are Sheens sees him predominately as a 1 or BS 14

Moltzen's inability to succeed in positions which don't suit him seem to really adversely affect his standing on this board.
There are a few things to note though.

1\. Moltzen has never been given a fair run in the halves since his injury and even prior to that, it wasn't a consistent run without the insecurity of moving positions at any given time.
2\. Moltzen wasn't the defensive liability Lui is in his time in the halves. His front-on defence in the line is fine AFAIC. He's not a strong defender by any means, but he's not someone that teams are going to gameplan to target like Lui.
3\. Moltzen is the best structural/organising halfback at the moment (Miller could be better in the future judging by snipets I've seen of him, but he's not up to the NRL yet). Moltzen's ability to structure the side and promote the ball at the right times is far better than Lui. His style compliments our main men, whereas Lui contrasts them.
4\. Moltzen's game is running the ball with handy ball-playing. Benji and Farah dominate the kicking and ball-playing even with Lui at half. Lui is too much like Benji - predominantly a ball player. He's nowhere near the threat to bust the line that Moltzen is/was. Moltzen gives us a speedy player in the halves who has a defence on the edge because he can run through you just as easily as he set someone up. No-one else in the team can provide that.

Don't get me wrong, Lui should definitely be the starting halfback at the moment. He's done nothing to discredit himself. He's performed admirably out of position as definitely shown that we are a genuine threat to the title, even with him at halfback. He's very skillful, despite being a square block to a round hole in our setup and to an extent wasted. Moltzen coming back from knee surgery still has a lot to prove. If the world was ideal, I wouldn't have Moltzen wasting himself in the 3/4s when it's obviously not for him. I'd have him playing for BRET honing his skills in the halves come the time of injury or extended periods of poor form of a player in the grade above him. If Moltzen can adequately show he is well and truly over his injuries and prove that he back to his former self, then should he be the undisputed halfback option.

In short, yes I believe he is the best option at halfback at the club, but not right now. Should he prove he is very much the same pre-surgery player he was, then he should have the 7 jumper on his back as he runs out the tunnel.

Lukic in terms of defence the biggest problem is that teams can target Lui and Moltzen together. Moltzens arm grabbing doesn't help but essentially defending two halves next to each other is like requesting to be run at down that side

I hope you are right Balmain Bug.

I think he will get a halves position at Souths as he is wasted at centre, full-back and on the bench.

Frees up money for Adam Blair.

Maybe Sheens can promote a State Cup centre until Lawrence returns.

Word on the street is that he has signed a 3 year $1m deal with Souths.

That's a pretty good deal for him and he'll be the halfback there, which is the better position for him, certainly looks far more comfortable there than anywhere else. If the word on the street is correct, wonder when this will be comfirmed officially?

signed?

wow,

guess Moltzen will be moving out of Casa de Marshall, and moving in with Johnny "Coke Zero" Sutton then.

shame if he goes, reckon he had a future as a gun impact player, but he himself hated being described as that.

i know what your thinking, "another moltzen thread"

i just wanted to point out that i thought his match confidence is finally starting to improve.
after watching the replay i noticed that he was running in support alot more, getting in to tackles alot more and even making better kick returns.

the real moment that gave me hope was when he made the great kick return in the 2nd half.

that is all  :sign:

Tim Moltzen's hopes of becoming Wests Tigers' long-term fullback have been boosted by news the NRL club is not looking to replace the departing Wade McKinnon.

McKinnon signed with Hull last week after the Tigers agreed to release him early from his contract to join the English Super League side in 2012.

Moltzen is off-contract at the end of next year and was given permission to speak to other NRL teams this month, but recruitment manager Warren McDonnell said hiring a fullback is not a priority.

"We've got some good youth coming through the club like Jake Mullaney who is in the state cup side, plus Tim Moltzen can also play there," McDonnell told AAP.

"Tim enjoys playing fullback and he now might get a chance to regularly, also Mitch Brown can play there too, so we are well covered.

"We will have a look to see what is out there, but we are not going to be targeting a fullback in our recruitment for now."

Moltzen has played most of this season in the centres and spent time at halfback following his return from a knee reconstruction last year.

However the 22-year-old sees himself as a No.1 and, despite having looked at what's on offer from other clubs, he's in no hurry to leave.

"I prefer fullback, I worked really hard in the pre-season of 08-09 and had a full year at it in `09 and came back to the halves just to fill in," Moltzen said.

"It worked out that I went all right there so I stayed there but I think eventually fullback's where I want to end up.

"I'm definitely committed to the Tigers and I love the Tigers and all the boys at the club so I'm not looking to go anywhere.

"I'm not looking to move anywhere and the club's not looking to move me on so I'm happy where I am."

McDonnell said the Tigers are still hopeful of signing Melbourne prop Adam Blair with an offer for his services very much still on the table.

"I don't think it's any secret that we have made an offer to Adam, we have not set him a timeframe for a response," McDonnell said.

"There are a few other clubs also interested so it's a case of just waiting and biding our time, but it is a good deal and we are confident."

ie. Nothing.

Its sounding better by the minute.

More and more people on the Moltz for fullback bandwagon including the man himself. Hodgo was my favorite player and I've been waiting for a no 1 with his ability. I reckon Moltz can do it. If not Moltz than maybe Mullaney is up to it.

All I know is that we might finally be getting a fullback who gives us attacking options.

Great news!

Now Moltz has some stability, I think he should concentrate on how to excel in the position. He has a lot of areas to imrpove but with confidence and guidance he can go up and up from here.

Moltzen is desperately looking for a spot in the team.
His attacking options including dummying and going for the line when he's 5 out.

Mitch Brown should be fullback, his form at the back of 2010 warrants another go while Wade is out.
He defuses bombs with apparent time and ease.

Moltzen should "work really hard at it" for longer. He has potential but we have better options at the moment. Which is unfortunate for him.

So in summary - We didn't really want Moltzen for next year so we allowed him to negotiate with other clubs, no one wanted him, and now we are going to consider him for first shot at FB and not recruit a specialist FB?
