Monday night football set for scrapheap

I think what Gallop should of said is something along the lines of 'Monday Night Football is not good for the clubs, it rates well for Foxtel but unless Foxtel can greatly increase their offer to ensure Monday Night Football is more sustainable for our clubs, we will move the game to a friendlier timeslot.'

Sometimes I think he needs to be a bit more assertive with these things, League rates well on all networks, they want our product. If they want it bad enough, they will give the NRL the money and the timeslots it wants.

Without League, channel 9s Friday nights are dead, as is shown over the Summer. Without League, Foxtel will lose 39 of its top 50 rated programs. No way in hell will they want to lose the rights.

It's a bit of a power game and I just think Gallop's attitude sometimes is more like 'We need their money so lets not tick them off and lets play things safe'. It hands the power over to the networks and I think that shows just by looking at ch 9's treatment of the Melbourne market.

It was a hassle to get to though - Campbo on Monday night was a no go for a lot of people working in Sydney and living away from Macarthur. You'd be getting home after 12.

the games on monday finish at 9pm at the latest. why would it take over 3 hours to get home :question: :question: :question:

Yes this sounds like a bit of pro-active negotiating by the NRL.

Clubs can't complain about Monday night gate receipts in one breath and then want more from the next TV rights deal in the next sentence.

As a TV product I think it is excellent, so long as you have Fox (and that is the point). There is almost no competition from other sports on a night where most people aren't going out to parties etc. It also increases the media exposure, because we now have match coverage on Tuesdays before the teams are released for the Wednesday papers, previews Thursdays etc.

The main negative for mine is actually getting to the game on time. As was said, finishing late on a Sunday or Monday is much the same, but actually getting out of work at 5pm and hauling your butt over to the footy is difficult. Try getting anywhere near ANZ at 5:30pm!!!

Hate Monday Night Football, have to wait until monday all weekend to see your team play if they are unlucky enough to get picked there and the turn around isnt very fair either on the players, just ask tim sheens, he doesnt like it either.
