Moving forward

The team really mixed up the attack yesterday and it looked a lot more fluent. Brooks played more direct which attracted the outside defenders to come in, more intent to offload with Tuki, Stef, OFa, and Tamou all offloading.
Luciano, Stef and OFa also had turns passing at the line and linking the backline. Let’s hope it wasnt just a one off because it was against the broncos.

Good to get a win. Hopefully it covers some of the cracks and brings the squad together.

A couple of things from today's game:
- Stefano needs to be the starting front rower for the rest of the season. He is a beast and needs minutes in his legs.
- Pauga needs to work on his defence. It was poor but obviously a big step up in opposition in the last 6 months. I would look at rotating him & Hoffman for remainder of the season
- Laurie is a gem, needs more support around him
- Garner needs to go, play Blore. He has no energy and is a lazy footballer. Running a good line every now an again should not be the basis
- Can we please stop the charade the is Mbye. He looks like he does not want to be there, and not sure many want him there.

All correct but what concerned me most was Garner.

I was at the game and at one stage we were exclusively watching him in backplay. He must have an injury or something really wrong. He can be hot and cold as we know, but at times he was really slow off the ground and was stretching maybe a lower back injury all game. I'm happy that we need more from him, but he had an issue, 100%

I think Gamble got him a good one early and he didn't recover.

What I liked about Pauga yesterday was he also got smashed a few times - Staggs got him a real good one and then pressed his face into the turf, but he just kept showing up, taking the hitups, chasing the play. Didn't go into his shell. I am sure his defence can shore-up given more time to adjust to the pace of first grade.

Pauga reminds me a lot of Geoff Daniela, similar frame and energy.

Mbye quite effective at hooker, dare I say better passing coherence than Liddle. That's the problem with Mbye, he's has enough talent, but we never seem to be able to pick and stick because his form ALWAYS wanes. He's played well at FB, well at centres, well at hooker, well off bench, well at 5/8th, but only initially, then he drops away.

We all should remember Joey Manu had issues with his defence when he came into the NRL. Centre is a tough position in which to defend. Pauga will learn from this and improve.

Chris Lawrence also. Brooks also. Brooks arguably the best defender in the backline now, for several seasons.

Doueihi is a 5/8. He's a primary ballplayer, has a great pass, run and kicking game. You want him to have the ball making decisions. I don't see him as a lock, that's more a speedy, physical ball runner type who tackles all day and wants more. Doueihi is craft and poise. Munster, fittler, Widdop, Walker, Lockyer were/are either slower or around same speed as doueihi. The problem with him at centre or lock is you want him with the ball making the decisions, that's why it was frustrating watching him at centre, that's why he's a 5/8.

I think the time at centre was good for his development though, he was much more aware about creating space for others today. Laurie had his best game at the club and that was due to the work of AD. I have been critical of him not making the players around him better, today he did that. If he continues to do that over the next few weeks it will also improve his running game.

Doueihi straightened the attack well, which made all the difference. Also he has no qualms taking the run if the play falls down, and he's very difficult to bring down in the tackle. He just needs to continue to practice and learn when to pass, when to run.

I was thinking who he reminds me of and this is it. I'd forgotten his name.

The thing is with Doueihi is that just letting him run it is typically a really good option.

Exactly mate, there was a lot subtly about his play yesterday. The way he was straightening the attack created the room for Laurie to play such a strong game. That is how he needs to play when at 5/8th.
