My opinion of potter

He has the wrong attitude of a coach I clearly heard him say on the Sunday footy show after he dropped Benji that he doesn't have to be the player’s friend.

When you’re a coach if you want to create a great club culture you have to be their coach their friend and you just about have to be a father figure to the young guys.

I know that’s what Craig Bellamy, Wayne Bennett and Tim Sheens did previously for the Wests Tigers. You can't just walk around like King S$%T and say I’m the coach I’ll do whatever I want.

It's not just the injuries why we are losing it's the fact players are turning up to the game with the wrong attitude because the coach has failed to establish himself on the team.

Potter thinks he is Warren Ryan….newsflash.....Your a dud

You dont have to be their friend….that also takes time.

Do you think Sheens Bennett etc became father figures to their players after their first 6 months of coaching?

Bennett was 37 when he coached a 27 yo Mal Meninga & a 25yo Gary Belcher

You don't have to be bestest of friends to have team unity, it just takes respect. Potter seems to be giving it out, but not getting much back from the players. He's done a bloody good job so far in my opinion, and I'm looking forward to the club finally getting their ass in gear, dropping the ridiculous boys club mentality, and playing like a first grade team. This isn't local ressies, it's a professional business and some players need to start acting like it.

Everything said in this post nothing more to say apart from if you don't like it as players find a new club.

I tend to agree. Sure Wests Tigers have had injury problems this year but Potter cannot keep using that excuse for Wests Tigers' dismal effort this year. Potter's job is to inspire his team during these crisis times and that is one attribute he has been lacking throughout this season. He has to show his players that he is going through the same physical and mental pain that they are currently going through. Get more connected with the players Sitting on a sideline bench to watch each match would be a good start.

Most didn't put in last year, or the year before that, or the year before that.

The problem is that 80% of the squads have been building to what is now the dominant side make up while we have recruited back rower after back rower and gone backwards year after year. When Benji was younger and more elusive we got away with it because that is how special he was. Times change, Benji is slowing down and without forwards to bend the line he has less space. Who do we see about that? The current coach or the senile muppet ho single handed bought this squad to the shambles it is

It wont matter who you bring in to coach.

That won't change until you start turning over those players

I was starting to get worried, until I read your post, Smeg.

You are right that the team has failed to turn up ready to play on many occasions. Early last year, when they were favourites, they were very poor on most occasions. This failure to turn up with the right attitude did not seem to concern the then coach, because no-one got dropped.

In 2005, the speed of the play-the-ball was fast, so it favoured our smaller, highly-mobile forward pack. With the addition of a speedy set of backs, a very, very good full-back and a good, organising half-back, we had the most suitable team for the time.
Since then, the slow play-the-ball favours big forwards, who make yards up the centre and set things up for the backs. Wests Tigers, for some reason, seemed not to notice the change in the game style and failed to follow other teams into bigger, stronger forwards.

After 2005, with the exception of Ellis, I cannot remember any player acquisition, who turned out to be a great gain.

None of these things or the current injuries can be attributed to Mick Potter, but surely they are the major reasons for being on the bottom of the competition.

The rot set in last year.
A boys club mentality
A crippling injury toll
A board who is not united
Players who think they are not accountable for there performances.
Support staff he inherited from the sheens era.
A second tier cap which we have exhausted.

Potter is trying to change the culture it will take a while , the soft team we are is due to the Sheenious years of coaching.

A clean out is required which we all know is happening the jury is out until he can stamp his authority and clean out the crap.Untill then I will not pass judgement as we all know he needs two years to sort this mess out.

Agree with oxygen.
If the cleanout is with potter then he needs to see it through it will be a 2-4 year process. Until then I won't bag the coach. the boys club is over and about bloody time. Now we need the dysfunctional board to get in order. Decide what way we are heading get feedback from the fans/members. And move on from the sheens era.

Potter has been at pains on several occasions to say that he was not going to use the big injury toll as an excuse - but dont let that get in the way of what you have to say.

as far as im concerned decisions like benching benji and farah have been power plays to show who is in charge at the end of the day

i dare say the relationship between farah and potter has blossomed since

as for the rest, well sheesh mate, we have like 10 of our top 25 out. do that to ANY team and lets see how they go.

tedesco has been good but still isnt setting the world on fire, i think the love for him at times has clouded peoples thinking. dont get me wrong, he's good, but moltzen was playing quite well at the start of the season.

peace

and dont even start on the shambles Sheens left the rest of the club in. Assistance coaches, atrocious. Salary cap, absolute mess. Still paying Gibbs, Heighington and Ellis?? Pathetic. Add in the injuries and to be honest, i'm surprised we've gotten 2 wins this season…

dont even get me started on utai, tuqiri and blair...

I would have this pack….

Woods/Farah/Ava.....Sue/Buchanan/Fulton.

Reserves.....Sirro/Groat/Mr T/BMM.

That's if POtter sticks with the grunt approach.

i think we will get to that pack.. eventually. maybe with blair instead of mr. t though

your starting line up itself has 3 people who debuted this year + reserves who have next to no first grade experience (except bmm, sirro hasnt played in the forwards at nrl level yet)

i think potter has been extremely smart with his use of forwards so far. he is still trying to figure out which forward's strenghts, weaknesses, fitness etc. it will take time, but i personally think that will be our pack towards the end of this season

that pack atm, would get slaughtered. also, i quite like buchanan off the bench. he adds a lot of impact.

It's obvious one thing about Potter is it looks as if nothing fazes this guy. However I would like to start to see some positives playing out in the next month. To me he seems to be a slow learner about getting this team together. Hopefully we can be settled fairly soon and get out on the park and look like we want to be there.

Your hatred of Tedesco by deliberately spelling his name incorrectly on purpose is well documented in previous threads.
Good of you to once again mention your superstar bro Moltzen on a topic in relation to Potter.

Tedesco 7 games 800 metres…114 metres a game.
Moltzen 7 games 448 metres ...64 metres a game.

Yeah your best mate Moltzen was really setting the world on fire...... only took 90 NRL games.

Tedesco has played 8 games of NRL coming off a serious injury.....but unlike your buddy he is not using that as an excuse and is averaging over 100 metres.

My thoughts on the thread.
1\. Potter has been set a tough assignment, a roster with weaknesses now injury ridden
2\. very few coaches are mates with the players, Bennett and Bellemy have both said many times theyu are the players boss and have a great working relationships with many players but they are not friends. Ive heard some stories where bennett has been overly ruthless.
3.regardless of the coach this year was always going to be a transitional year, blooding alot of kids who were always going to make more mistakes than you'd like. There is only one way to get experience and that is to play.
4\. The comment about Moltzen at fullback seemed ridiculous, he seemed comfortably our best back and 3rd best player before injury
5\. Despite the score board, there has been some positives, we will be better for havig Buchannan, Sue and a few others get to play NRL, NOafluma, Sironen, Tedessco are eligble for NYC and doing an admirable job in NRL. Potter is giving them a chance to build and we will be rewarded for this down the track.

Potter is being judged after two months but we gave Sheens a decade before we were allowed to question his ability.Potter has taken over a squad that has not the size, skill, enthusiasm, athleticism or self belief to be effective. He has inherited "f troop" as his support staff, a motley group who have failed to deliver for yonks. He has been hampered by a salary cap that has little or no where to move, due to poor recruitment and even worse ,poorly constructed contracts. He has had to try and change the mindset of the majority of his player, who have been playing a hybrid style of football that was a brilliant tactic for a short period of time but soon became totally ineffective. He is working with a board room that is totally dysfunctional. He has had a massive injury toll.

GIVE THE GUY A BREAK, he might not be the man, but lets hope he is the man to start the massive job of reform and drag us finally out of the past

we gave sheens a couple of years then he gave us a premiership. Not a decade.
