WHEN Wests Tigers take to the field in Campbelltown this NRL season, will they be running onto a McDonald’s Stadium or maybe a Westpac Field?
>
Mayor Paul Lake told the Advertiser if a corporation came up with ‘‘the right price’’, the council might sell the naming rights to Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
>
‘‘We would definitely consider it,’’ he said. ‘‘We’d be silly not to.’’
>
But Labor councillors won’t be cheerleading in support.
>
Former mayor Aaron Rule said he would in no way support a move to banish our city’s name.
>
‘‘Campbelltown is home to a first-rate stadium and as far as I’m concerned it already has a first-rate name,’’ he said.
>
‘‘The community of Campbelltown have paid for the stadium.
>
We can be proud it.’’
>
Cr Lake confirmed the selling of the naming rights would help with the upcoming multimillion-dollar budget cuts, due largely to cost shifting by the state government.
>
‘‘We’re looking at what to do for the coming budget,’’ he said.
>
‘‘Where we can trim, we will;but the benefits from most cuts we won’t see for 18 months.
>
‘‘If someone came to us and wanted to buy the stadium’s naming rights, for say $250,000, it would reduce the burden on the community as soon as it was sorted out.’’
>
After hosting the national W League final last Saturday
>
— which was televised nationally on ABC TV — and hosting four NRL matches this year, plus the Tigers’ only
>
home trial match this weekend, Campbelltown is set for a lot of publicity.
>
Or could it instead be a company that benefits?
>
The Advertiser asked Cr Lake how much it would cost to drop Campbelltown from the name of our sporting field.
>
He replied: ‘‘I have no idea what they would pay, but if it’s substantial, we’d look at it and consider the benefits. It would be a hot topic in council.’’
>
If the naming rights were sold, Cr Lake said the stadium would still be owned by the council, and the revenue raised would go straight back into the stadium.
>
‘‘It would be a benefit to the community,’’ he said.
