This Australian city wants to charge people to work on their cars

A simple oil change could cost more than $400 for residents of this Australian city, which now requires permits for common acts.

Residents of Victoria’s most populous region have to pay upwards of $400 just to work on their own vehicles, after a local government area imposed strict rules around private land use earlier this year.

The City of Casey in Melbourne’s south-east, which includes suburbs like Cranbourne and Berwick, requires residents to apply for a private land use permit if they’re planning to store more than two unregistered vehicles for up to 90 days, store long heavy vehicles, and even dismantle, repair or service vehicles......................................

Its hard enough as it is with the cost of living problems many face....this is just another BS govt ploy to rort us....much like fishing licenses, gotta pay to have a bit of fun
Id hate to see this become the norm....what next?
Licenses to cook for yourself, mend or make your own clothes?
Build yasself a shed? Oh wait...

As long as it's not disruptive to your neighbours you should be able to do whatever you want on your own property. I suspect this is one of these situations where someone has designed an ordinance without really thinking it through properly and wiser heads will prevail.

Anyone with more than 1 unregistered car on their property is taking the piss. Either running a junkyard or a business, either way who gives a stuff

Of all the issues in Victoria, they found the time to make this something to spend their time on?

It’s well thought through. It’s called control.
