Nathan Cayless on wests tigers

I don’t mind this guy coming on board for a couple reasons , 1 he was a fairly good player and a very tough go forward player who could also defend well , 2 he is not from inside the fold of who has been hear , he is fresh into tiger town and I hope this has a good bearing going forward , seems to say the right stuff as well with no crap mixed in , I think we may have a better season than most will predict , can we win the GF I’m not sure but if I can get 20/30 to 1 we make the 8 I may have a lazy $100 on that as I think it will be a solid punt

Even though it’s only an assistant coaching role, it’s a bit surreal seeing a guy like him in our colours.

My thoughts:
Man it was good to hear him speak. I was a little against his appointment, now i see it as a good step.

Clearly he gets western Sydney. He knows some of the players and has worked with Stefano in the past. We need to drive a Western Sydney Underdog culture, players have to love playing here. Penrith do this well, manly do Fortress Brookvale well. I think he will contribute too that.

Liked hearing about expectations and he seems very grounded.

My main concern with Cayless was as a player he was tough as nails. But defensive structure, it was ruined by Nathan Hindmarsh. Hindy just took every second tackle, the leagues biggest Energizer bunny. (Notable nod to Liam Fulton, you rock.).

Im hoping Cayless has learned a lot about defensive tactics and structure. He probably has since playing. He will certainly toughen up the team and that would be great.

We need toughness and structure. Were getting one in spades with Cayless, hopefully he has learned the other and can impart to us.

It is and isnt.
I remember Jason Cayless his brother signing with us ages ago. So I feel like we have a connection, which is probably weird. I had thought for some reason Nathan was whispered about.

Guessing Parramatta have way too many past players who could be defensive coaches. Odd, looks like David Kidwell is their assistant coach? He would surely be defense.

Glad to see Nathan among our ranks, particularly with Papallii arriving 🙂

He speaks really well and it sounds like he’s a really good communicator so hopefully he will be able to act as a conduit between Madge and the team and help Madge’s messaging resonate with the team. Trent Robinson spoke highly of him last year, saying he did a great job of preparing the fringe players for grade during NSW Cup cancellation.

Hopefully he’s picked up some good defensive tactics and knowledge from the Roosters system.

Just watched the video. Very impressed with the way the Cayless explained his role.
Ultimately his success will be judged by our defence in 2022. He seems like a good communicator and looks to be a person the players would have respect for.

I played against Nathan in U15's school rugby. I was at Ashfield and he was playing for Macquarie Boys'. That year he played 5/8th and annoyed me coz I was open-side flanker. Everytime the scrum broke, I'd head straight for him but he always dished-off before I could put a hit on. Always had a big upper body so it wasn't all padding during his playing days. Played in the South-West Met Zone side together but never got to know him, although I've always felt proud that he kicked on.
Tough, uncomprimising and always a hard, clean player who gave his all. Great to hear his take on things and looking forward to seeing our boys reap the benifits of his experience.
