I've been hearing a lot about how valliant and brave the Blues were last night. As far as I'm concerned, we shouldn't be expecting any less from them. I haven't heard much about how they blew a golden chance to end Queensland's five-year reign. That was one of the least impressive performances by a Queensland team for some time, yet despite all their efforts NSW still weren't good enough to beat them.
They were without Inglis and Hodges, yet we still couldn't beat them. Thurston missed a kick from right in front, something that probably won't ever happen again for the rest of his career. We held them out for four sets of six midway through the second half. The Maroons from a year or two ago would have put the game away at that point, but they were having an off night.
After all that, we somehow conjure up two tries to take the lead … and then immediately give it back to them! All three Queensland tries were soft, in particular Yow Yeh's one, which was another piece of NSW ineptitude that we have seen at least once a series during these last five years. However, because we came so close to beating them, it'll be used to justify keeping pretty much the same team.
It's inexplicable, with his record now being 1-4 in Origin matches, that Ennis will be in the team for game two. Surely, Robbie could not have done any worse in those five games. I hate to say this as a New South Welshman, but I'm predicting that the Queenslanders will see last night as the kick up the backside they needed to stay hungry and will win game two in a much more convincing fashion.
