No half measures here

FOR four seasons, Tim Moltzen has impressed Wests Tigers fans with the number one on his back.
But now Moltzen has to become a smarter ball player when he takes on the critical position of halfback.

Coach Tim Sheens spoke to Moltzen about the positional change when it was confirmed he would stay at the Tigers after a contract battle with the St George Illawarra Dragons at the end of 2011.

‘‘Once all the dust settled and I figured out where I was going to be, I had a chat with Tim and we spoke about where he would like to play me and where I wanted to play and came to the agreement that halfback was probably what suited both of us and that’s where I have done all my pre-season training,’’ Moltzen said.

‘‘In the last few years I have sort of trained a bit in both [positions] and it’s been a bit up in the air as to where I was playing so it’s definitely good to have one position and a certain skills set to work on.’’

Moltzen’s partner in crime in the halves is former roommate Benji Marshall — someone with whom Moltzen shares a close friendship on and off the field.

‘‘I am in awe of some of the things he does,’’ Moltzen said.

‘‘Sometimes I’ve got to remember to switch on and play and not just stop and watch.’’

The halfback position carries a lot of responsibility and it’s not for players who don’t want to ruffle feathers.

‘‘I think when I first came into grade something that you never wanted to do was over-call the senior guys [on the field] because you didn’t want to upset them,’’ he said.

‘‘But I think having played for a couple of years now I’m comfortable enough to call the ball or over-call Benj or Robbie [Farah].

‘‘I think as a ball player you’ve got to — how do I say it — I guess, have the balls to over-call them and not be worried about doing the right thing.’’
