Nofoaluma to soar higher in 2014

With a match-winning try in just his second first-grade game and the Dally M’s Try of the Year for his memorable acrobatic effort against the Manly Sea Eagles, it’s fairly safe to say that David Nofoaluma achieved more in 2013 than he could possibly imagined.

That’s not to say, of course, that Nofoaluma’s career leading up to 2013 didn’t hint a possible star could be waiting on the wings at Wests Tigers.

A debut for the Australian Schoolboys team in 2010 along with two seasons with the NSW under-18 team plus a Grand Final-winning season with Wests Tigers’ 2012 NYC team all pointed towards the young winger from Newcastle being a very strong first-grade player whenever he got the call up to the first team. The only thing was, few, including Nofoaluma himself, expected that call to come as soon as it did.

As many of the Wests Tigers’ first-grade team suffered injuries last season, an opportunity presented for Nofoaluma to make his first grade debut on the wing as early as Round 10.

By the time the season had ended, the then 19-year-old had eight first-grade tries to his name, 15 appearances under his belt and one very impressive highlights package.

Looking back, the difference between this time last year and now is clear for Nofoaluma.

“For myself, there’s a massive difference between pre-seasons,” he said.

“Last pre-season I was one of the young guys, I was just getting into my first year of first-grade and was really excited. I was just aiming to get my first-grade debut and was a little caught up in the excitement of being around all the NRL stars.”

“But this pre-season I’m a bit more level-headed with it all and I’ve got a lot of things that I want to work on from last season. Just little things that I can see in my game, a bit of maturity in my game and picking up on little things that I missed last year.”

Still only 20 years old, Nofoaluma pointed out his understanding of the game and what needs to be done as the biggest area where he could improve this year, as he looks to secure a permanent starting spot on the right wing.

“For this year, I just want to help out the team more,” he said. “The forwards do a lot of work in the middle and I’d just like to help them out a bit more. That was something I didn’t quite know last year, I guess I picked up a lot of experience and I want to get better in that.

“I want to be better in scoring more tries and finding the line more as well.

“Obviously I scored tries last year, eight I think, but I’d like to lot more and be up there with the top-try scorers in the NRL. That’d be something that’s one of my goals for this year.

“There’s plenty of things to work on; I’m just looking forward to doing them,” he said.

Before he can do that, of course, Nofoaluma’s first hurdle will be overcoming a niggling hamstring that has hampered him a little this off-season, forcing him to withdraw from the Auckland Nines as well as the club’s pre-season trial against the Cronulla Sharks.

“It’s actually coming along well,” he said about his hamstring. “I’ve been doing everything that’s possible to get back as quick as I can.

“It’s just the type of thing that I’ve got to take slow because the healing process is slow. It keeps twinging and keeps coming up and occurring so I guess I’ve got to take it slow and, like I said, do everything possible to get back quick and in time for Round 1.”

I'm a big fan of Nofa, hope he has a blinder of a season, I think he's a better prospect than Marika, especially defensively.

Fingers crossed he's right for round 1\. He'll be a handful this year IMO with his build and speed which has improved.

Big fan of him. He runs like a mini version of Tuiaki. In fact I'm going to call him Little Tank from now on, and so should you.

Sounds like there is some doubt there for RD1…

I really hope second year syndrome doesn't hit for a lot of these fellas!

To be in your second year of NRL and aiming to be one of the top try scorers may be a little bit to confident. I just hope he does his job well and completes what is asked.

That is how he will be a strong performer, not by trying to score more points than any other..

I'm not usually pessimistic but from that interview….. Well I hope his ego hasn't over swelled..

psh not at all. the kid has talent, he knows it and we know it. He should definitely be aiming to be up there in the top 5-10 in the NRL. If you're a semi decent winger who stays fit the entire season you really should be in the top 10 at least imo. And given he's a bit better than semi decent, i see no problem in him aiming to be up there near the top 5

Will be nowhere near the top 5 try scorers lol…

Not through any fault of his own, mainly because we won't be scoring a lot of tries this season... Regardless of how people on this place like to over-rate our own players, we are wooden spoon favs for a reason, our squad is ordinary.

If our backline plays to potential we will test quite a few sides this season ,especially if the pigs get the job done

Sadly no.

As much as I hate to say it, we have an ordinary squad this year.

Sit down and look at all the NRL squads and compare them with no biased view and you will see our squad is in the bottom 3, perhaps even last.

Look at our core of 1,6,7,9…

Fullback: Yes we have a very talented young fullback in Tedesco, but he is injury prone and isn't at his peak yet and we have no replacement for him if he gets injured.

Five Eight: Anasta is well past his prime and Austin is more cold than hot.

Halfback: Brooks has a lot of future potential but we are talking 2014 here and he only has 1 first grade game under his belt.

Hooker: I love Farah, he's a champion, but is entering the back-end of his career, still a classy hooker but not what he used to be.

We have the quality youth to be a force in a few years time, but right now our squad is very much a lower table squad and anybody who has aspirations of us going top 4 etc. this year is a very devoted optimist 😱pen_mouth: .

I absolutely hope that I'm proven wrong, I'm by no means hating on the team, we have a very good future I feel, but this year, don't expect anything above a bottom 4 finish in my opinion.

WOW

Tedesco played 19 of 20 games (he played NSW Cup Round 1,2 and 3 according to Wikipaedia ?? ) and played with a cracked fibula for about 8 of those games

Injury prone LOL ,fullbacks get belted from pillar to post

He will be our best back this season and that includes Brooks

I wouldnt call our squad ordinary….inexperienced yes, but there is a heap of talent on our books. I am not expecting a top 8 finish this year, but am looking forward to seeing our squad develop into one that will challenge for the title as early as 2015, 16 at latest. Eeveryone I know who follows the game has us pencilled in for bottom 3\. They havent seen what we have seen from the youngsters as often....they will this year and it will surprise quite a few.

I dont think it is out of the realms of possibility for Ted, Nof and Simona to be scoring many tries this year.

z, i dont think anyone has tipped the team to get in the top 4 - a little hyperbolical there.

i agree with strykers post - tigers will be the big improvers this year. if they can keep their best players on the park, they have a good backline. and there is far better depth in the forwards this year than i can recall over the last few years.

5 more sleeps! go tigers!! :sign:

I reckon our 1-5 are guns…...if our pigs get on top watch these boys go.

I agree but I also think our forwards look better than they ever have. Its the halves that we have to worry about however if the forwards fire and the outside backs go well the halves will have an easier job.
