But cigarettes were expensive. As a 7 year old I'd go to the corner shop to buy my parents cigarettes. You'd get served without any questions and I think a pack was about 40 cents.
When my mother first sent me to buy her smokes I was about 7 (1958) and a packet of Rothmans 20s were 3/3 or about 32 cents in today’s money. The smokes got her in the end.

Yep TP , used to buy my Dads Benson and Hedges Gold 20s for 40 cents ( plus he threw in 5 cents for a lolly bag). Those were the days my friend …..
Yeah my Dad died of Emphysema but he was going through about 60-80 a day for years.
 
Walking down the road to go to a mates place in suburban Sydney with a slug gun in open view and no one batted an eye lid.

Today you would be surrounded by the tactical Response Group with a helicopter hovering over head, streets blocked off and news crews descending on the area.

Talk about a totally different world within your own life time.
