61 Years ago, 2nd May 1965, we witnessed a champions final victory.
An improved track surface automatically resulted in better racing at this meeting, which was highlighted by Jeff Freeman's brilliant record- braking drive to take out the 15-lap speedcar Feature Race.

The field was away to a good start, with Laurie Seidl leading early from Don Hunt and Wal Brooker. Lew Marshall was quickly up to second spot but Freeman was mowing them down at a rapid rate and on lap 5 blasted around Marshall at the pits and under Seidl in the main straight to lead. Marshall moved to second and Len Brock to third when he moved under Brooker on lap 10.

The finish saw Freeman a 100 yards clear of Marshall with 80 to Brock, followed by Brooker, Middlemass, Park, Seidl, Staples Oram, Bowland. Jeff Freeman's time took 6.6 seconds of Peter Bowlands existing record.

Back in the Day I was a St Johns Ambo volunteer cos we got to go to Sports Events for Free. I volunteered for the Liverpool Speedway one night cos it seemed a great night out. Our spot was on a curb right next to the track. After the night's event thankfully there were no driver or crowd injuries but Me and my mate had multiple facial bruises from the track spraying clods into our faces.

I met Tappy when a colleague who was the then STC Marketing Manager introduced me to him after a Canterbury meeting. He was very professional and was kind enough to tell some marvellous tales of his time in the game. He especially praised Hollywood star Mickey Rooney, who loved the Horses (National Velvet) and Australian racing in particular.

Caroline Jones the first female reporter of This Day Tonight ,and later on Four Corners, died on the this day in 2022 age 84 years.

Not to mention the free milk which was delivered in the morning around 9am and was warm as toast by recess at 10.30am. No refrigeration in Sadleir Primary, Green Valley in Summer!
