NRL 9's - Jan 2014

6\. Not a fan of the nines
For the record, I'm totally against any form of competition involving a reduced number of players. The sevens, or nines, or whatever it is they want to propose, holds no interest for me whatsoever. I think it's a cheap gimmick. I think it is an over-use of our players. I think it is unfair on the players who are these days coached and trained to play a 17-man game. I think it is an abuse of the player's profiles. I think it is a huge risk for clubs to play their highly-paid players in such a nondescript competition. I am sure when push comes to shove, clubs won't put forward their elite talent to participate. These are my opinions and my opinions alone. They are not the opinions of the Panthers, the club where I am currently consulting. However, should the Panthers seek my recommendations on the matter I will be saying, in the strongest possible terms, that they should have nothing to do with any proposal for a nines competition. Our players entertain the fans enough as it is. They do more than enough for charities, communities and junior leagues. We don't need another ''hit-and-giggle'' version of league to promote our code.

Above is Gus gould's opinion of the 9's. I actually agree with him. I'm not that interested in it. I'm sure there are those that disagree. But how you are you going to feel with losing nofo and koro to injury for a few months in this circus tournament?

I'm sure there are heaps of other touch footy comps you can watch over summer.

Im hanging for the nines.

By January im going crazy like im in rehab and itching to break back I to a bad habit.

This is the one time only that I think I would have liked to still have Benji.

How is losing players to injury in a tournament that pays prize money any worse than losing players to injury in meaningless pre-season practice matches?

Well losing players to injury is never good. Losing them in a meaningless circus tournament would be worse. It doesn't matter because no club is going to risk their high profile players in ths sort of thing anyway.

Honestly do you see the likes of inglis, slater, Cronk, smith, Farah, Dugan, SBW…......the list goes on.......playing in ths sort of thing?

No kidding it will be the young kids with a few has beens thrown in making up these 9's teams.

How many wallabies, all blacks or even super 15 level payers take part in the rugby 7's??? NONE!

Call me cynical but the more I think about it the more of a joke it seems.

I remember going to see a sevens tournament back in the 90s at Parra Stadium. It was a fantastic day full of attacking football, with a buzzing crowd and plenty of other activities on the oval behind the stadium. It was a fantastic day and I would love the chance to take my son to such a day too.

This should be on one weekend. Then the next weekend they should have Indigenous vs Maori/Islanders and scrap the all star game.
Would be a good promotion for the game in NZ and actually introduce some rivalry in the Indigenous game..

The concept will probably die quickly. Here in New Zealand, the 7s competition between the provincial sides has only taken off in the last 3-4 years, despite having been around since 2003\. Now that people are actually paying attention, they are pouncing on the opportunity to make a quick buck by moving it from the beautiful Queenstown to characterless Wellington.

Let's not forget what the All Stars game is about. Its about the Indigenous community.

The players all like the concept and want to play in the game. I don't think the same will be able to be said about the 9s. Will clubs put out their top players? If not, people will not show up to watch.

Loved the Craven Mild Cup for those that can remember !
Loved the 7's comp too …. Particularly when we won it.
Thumbs up for me for a preseason comp.

I actually liked an idea Mister Mayor put up for a knockout
Comp while the state of origin is on and played over three weekends.
About the only idea I like of his.

So I'll see you in Auckland for this next year then?

The Indigenous players wanted to play but I don't think the "NRL All Stars" really cared. The nines could be a great success if they make it international.

Hodges has come out and said he will boycott the 9's tournament if it is given the go-ahead over the Aboriginal Appreciation and Sympathy game that has been played over the past couple of years, what a knobhead. If only he would boycott the NRL altogether we would all be spared his empty tough-guy threats at Origin time.
