NRL are so amateurish when it comes to player contracts

It is absolutely ridiculous that Perrett actually told his teammates he was leaving, that he expected to be at Bulldogs training YESTERDAY and that Hasler was going to name him in his team for this weekend TODAY … yet he is still contracted with the Roosters. Amateur hour!

But it's the type of thing that keeps on happening because the NRL don't seem to have any concrete rules on player transfers. Contracts mean absolutely nothing. Players can be released and join another team at any time. This type of stuff never happens in the professional sports leagues in America, where the rules do not allow for a situation where a player signs a contract with another team for the following season almost twelve months before it even begins.

The solution is to have an acknowledged transfer window or deadline. If a player starts the season with one team, he should finish it with them unless he is traded to another team before a certain date. I would think that a week or two after the completion of State of Origin would be a good time for this deadline. This method where a team just releases a player before his contract is over needs to stop.

There should be a midseason transfer window between rounds 13-15\. You can't begrudge players for wanting to move to a new club to get a start, especially when they've signed on for more than just the remainder of the season (i.e Inu, Mitchell & Perrett.)

Obviously during the off-season players should be free to move between clubs as they please, pending releases etc.

There is a player transfer deadline It is the 30th of June

But we need a recognised transfer window Maybe from 1st of June to the 30th June

And I still believe that a designated NRL person needs to sit in on any contract signed by any player whether it be a mid season signing or a normally contracted player

I don't have any issue with players signing at any time

You have to strike while the iron is hot and players can get what they are worth when they are playing their best footy not at the end of the season

Just my two bobs worth

The nrl has always lagged behind most sports for it's poor administering and this is sadly just another example. I agree we should have a transfer window as opposed to just a single cut off point. It's a huge distraction for clubs so to condense it down to 2, 3 weeks at most is best. I think fans will accept it over time. Sure you might lose the odd player over time but obviously it will work both ways. You win some, you lose some.

Just on Perrett also, I don't know what the mitigating circumstances are but it would be sad if he was being forced from that club as I reckon he has probably been their most consistent player since he started with them.

The one player at that "club" that I have some small amount of respect for.

Happy, regarding your comment on the June 30 deadline.

I'm pretty sure I heard that it was scrapped because of the amount of signings that would be announced in the first few days from July 1st.

Almost all contract negotiations were completed and finalised prior to June 30 then signed and announced once it passed.

Unfortunately, the NRL scrapped it without putting something else in place which has resulted in clubs announcing signings ridiculously early, ie James Maloney's signing with to Roosters announced over a year before he would even start his first preseason at Bondi.

To me a negotiation window would be a good solution, but the only problem being selection the appropriate time frame.

If its in the middle of the year, you will have some players worrying about negotiating deals instead State of Origin preparation.

Too late in the year and over half of all clubs should be solely focused on the finals.

It sure is a tricky one.

Actually the contract system in the US is no better than here. In all the major sports, at any time a player can be traded to another team regardless of where that player wants to play. In that model players are considered a commodity to be traded.
At least players and clubs both have some say in our system, besides if a player wants to leave do you really want him to stay? And let's not forget the cashman would have been contracted to saints…

I think it should be done the same as soccer, 2 transfer windows each year (or 3 if you wanna get technical)
One in June because that's the mid way point of the season
And the other spanning from the day after the grand final (so September/October) through to a week before season kick off in march.
