NRL must cut games and expand

Does it leave a bad taste in anyone else's mouth that this guy who is now warning (and scaring fans) that there is no guarantee all nine Sydney clubs would survive under his vision for the game is a former CEO of South Sydney? :rant

There ARE too many Sydney teams. But any NRL team could be culled, if the senior management wants it.

It's the "how" it gets done is the concerning part.

Looking back, NZ Warriors had problems and needed bailing out. Cronulla have been the latest basket case, no sponsors, extreme debt. South Sydney the same a few years back. What can you say about Melbourne - held up by Newscorp.
Newcastle then and now.
Penrith in a bad way not that long ago. Wests Tigers.

So, if a team gets culled - is it just poor timing? Is there NRL favouritism?

Spreading their wings has been on their agenda for a long time .
It started before the super league war. The super league war brought it to a halt. And has slowly been brought back on track.

According to that article 3 Sydney teams will be pushed out . (IMO)

If this is true who do you think they will push out?

Cannaberry
South Sydney
Wests Tigers
Penrith
Parramatta
Cronulla
Manly
Sydney roosters
St George

Will it be based on demographic size!
Or will it be based on financial strength!

The article suggests financial strength.
I personally believe it shall be demographic size.
Or maybe it's just all a load of s..t.

Happy ,I will stick my neck out here and say,ok for a slight expansion if it is viable, but the player burnout dribble is just crap…

The boys used to play every weekend and also have a job and family...

Today these overrated want to be's are on big money and don't have anything to do all day but train..if they can't handle the schedule then find another job......just my opinion and I will stick to it..

It will probably depend on who is going down the gurgler at the time

Maybe the NRL will have set criteria that clubs must meet

The Central West Qld Tigers , come on up

Good point.

Instead of considering another New Zealand team we should be flicking the one already in the comp to make way for another AUSTRALIAN team.
The Kiwis can have their own competition.
We can then also get rid of Melbourne and Souths.
Melbourne because they have had News Ltd propping them up for years and have bugger all fans.
Souths because they are Souths.

And Ribot gets his Super League in the end….

The quality of players simply isn't there

The last teams to be moved from Sydney should be Wests and St. George Illawarra. They've done their bit for the NRL already so if they want to let basketcases with FA fans like Manly and Cronulla continue on while they consider moving two well followed and marketable teams the NRL can GAGF.

yep we've done our bit

Surely they would be looking at Cronulla, Easts and Parra?

What is "our bit"

Not looking at this as a biased WST supporter, I would assume that we would be the first team OUT. We barely rack up big numbers at games, I think the only game we got big numbers at this year was vs. Parra and the crowd was 70% Parra supporters, we are in a decimating financial position, may I also add the majority of our "supporters" don't even support WST but support either Magpies or Balmain. The NRL wants to move forward and our club will be preventing it from doing so.

Don't get me wrong, I love this club and wouldn't support anyone else if we are one of the teams but I would assume we are the first team out.

Here we go again. Some-one trying to re invent the wheel.
All this will do is cause disharmony.
The hierachy can't see that the winner from all this be other codes, AFL, Union.

Maybe if the "powers to be " had a good hard look at all costs of pricing when going to games, stupid game time scheduling, get rid of monday night footy, etc bigger crowds would turn up.

Our bit was that Wests and Balmain merged to become WestsTigers. So we have effectively reduced a Sydney based team by the merge and therefore one would think we should be ok.

Milkster,if they want to expand then there has to be a lot of thought and planning to do…

Remember,they have tried,Perth,Adelaide,Tweedheads,Hunter areas,all have folded...

There has to be good supporters base and financial gain where ever they go...Melbourne is successful to a point as long as they keep getting propped up by the media tycoon, otherwise in my opinion they would also fade, they are popular but have they got enough support down there to constantly keep buying big names or paying the big guns they still have?...

This is a way out there proposition, but how about we bring back Newtown or Norths, get rid of Canberra or Sharkies..don't worry Milky I'm just going back to the good old days..but in all seriousness expansion has to be viable, otherwise it just becomes another statistic ......

Merge Easts with Souths. It'll never happen but it makes sense.
