As many have noted here there is a question mark over the quality of the Souths forward pack. They were dominated in the first 20 and it was too far back from there. Now Burgess out for a period.

It's a good pack, they just weren't in it to start. Once they woke up they held their own against Melbourne. They were shell shocked by the pace of storm out of the gates I reckon

Will be interesting to see, I thought Storm's errors let them back in.

Souths made a heap of errors too. Was a fun game though overall enjoyed watching it

I thought the ref ruined the game when he awarded a penalty to Melbourne for Gagai's tackle on Hughs
He was committed and it was harmless and absolutely no malice in it
It's not like he came in 2 seconds later
If Gagai didn't tackle him he could have run through
What was he ment to do stand back and watch it
It gave Melbourne an 8 point lead and not enough time left for Souths
With a 6 point lead the game was still interesting
I thought that penalty was SOFT
It took the wind out of souths sails

The kicker was in the air and Gagai made contact and wrapped his arms around his legs. No malice by Gagai and first contact was above the waist but he does grab the legs and tuck his arms around them.

Pretty straight forward penalty.

Going to be a very long season for people if this the kind of refs call they blow up about. There will be actual stuff ups, wait for them to blow up. Save your energy.

Yes Hughs was in the air
Gagais timing was out by a split second
His arms Brushed Hughs
**There was no actual grab of the legs unless I missed something**
If Gagai pulls his arms away then all of a sudden its a shoulder charge and he gets a few weeks
You damned if you do and your damned if you don't in that situation
Just my opinion

Find a replay, both his hands/arms wrap or tuck around the legs. Just one of those unfortunate ones theyll pull up 9 out of 10 times.

that was the exact comment the ref made to souths when they questioned it

Here is a photo from the tackle
Notice how close the players are and at full speed
Hughes still has his foot planted on the ground and Gagai is so close to tackling him
Does the ref expect Gagai to stop
Are they telling the players to let the kicker get his kick away without and pressure

2 tenths of a second at full pace and he is on him
In the end there was absolutely no harm done and play should have went on in my opinion

Show he part they penalised mate. Where they claim he wrapped his arms around the legs at the end of the tackle. The penalty has zero to do with that screen grab and Im not debating anything you say there. The photo is irrelevant to the penalty

Edited for too many typos

When he hits where do you expect his arms to be in this photo
Down by his side ?

Just not wrapping his legs. Which is what the penalty is for. I’ve said that a few times. So a couple of inches up.

So who's everyone tipped for today's games? I'm 3/3 so far, roosters and Penrith seem obvious tips but the Titans v Warriors game will be close. I've gone with Titans to win but only just

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you leave the ground you shouldn't be touched no? This grey area should be the next ruling to be cleared up. I don't get why defensive players are allowed to essentially block an attacker - in a dangerous fashion or not. For me doing so is a penalty every time.

Yeah agree, that’s what the rules say as well. But there has to be some leeway because no pressure is not the way to go simultaneous contact also needs to be considered.

The rules are not really policed to the letter of them though, no using your legs to bring some one down. That happened planets of times in the last few games. Slings/swings using jumpers or anything really are illegal - again happens all of the time. It’s the inconsistency that kills me

I’ve heard refs from other sports explain it as the tackling player has a duty of care to not put the opposition player in a dangerous position while tackling. That seems a pretty sensible approach and is a pretty good test of whether it should be ok or not.

What I took from last night's Eels game is that nothings changed from Moses. He was the invisible man in the first half when his team was down and out. Then a momentum swing happened after half time and he was in everything. He will not win the Eels a premiership as he his selfish and will never pull his team out of a hole, he will go missing in big games and when the going gets tough. As much as I hate Guthos head and think he's a tool, he at least has the ability to motivate the team. The Eels hooker was great, whatever his name is.

Put us under enormous pressure’: Bulldogs coach to question NRL over penalty count

Hasn’t taken him long to start with the excuses😂😂😂

Gee I hate Parra. Worst thing about living in the hills, thought I heard some cheering on my street last night. Need to spill some round-up in someone's yard.

Three games in and the 6 agains for offside rule has been a complete failure. Needs to be taken out of the game as soon as possible

Refs continually waving their hands for what seems like no reason, fans and players not knowing what's an offside or a ruck Infringement 6 again.

The most obvious of all - teams are abusing it! Eels gave away THREE offsides in a row to pin broncos in their own end and instead of a penalty it's only a six again, it's essentially allowing cheating. This rule never looked good on paper and it's looked worse in practise.

Get rid of it PVL, not every rule can be about having the ball in play more that's not how rugby league works you can't eradicate penalties they exist for a reason, teams need relieving penalties at some point

Not defending him but no halfback would have looked good in the first half the Eels couldn't have played any worse it was mistake after mistake.

They're not... and that opens up a massive grey area of why refs penalised instead of a 6 again one time and didnt another. The rule just makes no sense at all

A penalty on tackle 1 and 2?

Even better, a penalty if you're in your own 20. Stops teams intentionally being offside to pin teams in their own end. Or just make offsides penalties as they have been for the entirety of rugby league

Six again is a farce ..
But in the game last night Warren Smith was actually explaining why the six agains were awarded ..
But if your at the game we still wouldn’t have a clue .

I'm not even a big fan of the 6 again for the ruck but the offside ones are ridiculous. Penalties are an important part of the game, PVL is obsessed with trying to keep the ball on the field at all times
