NRL season 2017: Laurie Daley and Geoff Toovey added to shortlist to coach Wests Tigers

Articles like this make me think Cleary really is just a few days away from being unveiled.
Neither are realistic options, and just smack of names a club 'source' would throw to a journo as a bit of a smoke screen whilst the finer details are being ironed out with Cleary.

Toovey would be great for defence. Hed drop players not performing straight away.

Ivsn Cleary is the man for this job though.

If Toovey has a few weeks spare give him top dollar on teaching the smaller guys how to bundle up the big guys (were those big Islander guys around in Toovey's day?)

Linking Daley with us sends shivers down my spine… one of the worst coaching records and that's with rep players.

Stop mucking around and get Cleary in asap.

everyone believes in what we were doing under Taylor, let's change the man, not the idea.

Whobelieves in it?

It was two wasted years

So his biggest mantra (defence) is no longer important?

I hope the three or four coaches mentioned in the articles don't change their minds by the time WT finally make a decision.

NRL season 2017: Laurie Daley and Geoff Toovey added to shortlist to coach Wests Tigers
Adrian Proszenko - SMH

Wests Tigers have added NSW coach Laurie Daley to a shortlist of prospective coaching candidates that also includes former Manly mentor Geoff Toovey.

Former Penrith coach Ivan Cleary remains the front runner to take over from Jason Taylor, while interim replacement Andrew Webster will get his first chance to impress when the side hosts Melbourne at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.

The wildcard could be Daley, who has overseen the Blues preparations for the past four State of Origin series. Daley's contract with the NSWRL expires at the end of the current campaign.

Daley was at the helm in 2014 when the Blues finally ended Queensland's Origin stranglehold, giving him one series win in four tightly contested years. The former Canberra pivot has previously been sounded out about a full-time NRL head coaching role, but to date has chosen to channel all of his energies into beating the Maroons.

Daley has a close bond with the Tigers' Blues representatives Aaron Woods and James Tedesco, two of the "big four" stars off contract. Woods, already captain at club level, is one of the main contenders to take over from Paul Gallen as state skipper. Daley handed Woods his Blues debut in his first year in charge and the prop has played a part in every series since. Tedesco earned his first Blues jumper last year and is expected to be a mainstay of the side at fullback.

The other members of the "big four", Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks, have been touted as future Origin stars but are yet to consistently produce the football required to be seriously considered.

Toovey has resumed his coaching career overseas, as the boss of embattled English club Bradford. The Bulls started the season 12 points behind their opponents as punishment for going into liquidation. The former Manly mentor boasts a 58 per cent winning record with the clipboard at NRL level.

The suitability of Cleary, Daley and Toovey for the Tigers job was discussed during a meeting of club powerbrokers on Tuesday, although it's understood none of the potential candidates has been contacted.

Webster said he felt for Taylor and admitted he had no idea how long he would be in the top job.

"You've got to understand I was an assistant coach 48 hours ago. You're not thinking about those sort of things," Webster said.

"You want to be an NRL head coach but you don't want to be an NRL head coach in these circumstances, particularly when the guy has been so good to you.

"I've got a lot of faith in these boys, a lot of time for them as individuals and players. After that initial disappointment for Jason, I had to stand up, be professional and think about them also."

The Tigers have churned through Tim Sheens, Mick Potter and Taylor in quick succession, raising questions whether the job was a poisoned chalice.

"I don't believe in anything like that," Webster said.

"How those things come about is up to people well above me. I don't read into anything about a poisoned chalice here at all."

The Tigers are attempting to retain their four most influential players, the off contract quartet of Brooks, Moses, Woods and Tedesco. Webster has had a particular influence on the young halves, having coached them at under 18s and under 20s level.

Webster – who has also had coaching stints at the Eels, Warriors and the Super League – is hopeful all four will stay put.

"I think they are great players, everyone knows how good they are," he said

"What they are doing behind the scenes with their recruitment and their manager and the club, is up to them.

"As an interim coach or even an assistant coach, I certainly don't know where that's at. But I think we all agree that we hope they stay because they are excellent players."

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH ! !

anyone on here watch that show - "silican valley "
this is identical to what the board did in the same situation… lololol....
ie
this is what a board does to give the outside world the belief they are considering some of the best people on the market for the role......when really they have already picked their target.
by mentioning tooves and daley - then settling for someone else, it will allow them to say, the man we chose "best suites" our vision for the future and is the best of the lot ..........

hopefully once this is done, the next piece of the puzzle will be for pascoe, go and some of the other clowns making these poor decisions to also go.
the club wont move forward with the same clowns.... that is a certainty !

Yeah would believe what Gus has to say….as if WT being a successful club is in his and Penrith's best interests. Gus is a very knowledgeable bloke in footy terms but doubt he would be wanting to steer his rivals in s good direction.....why did he sack Ivan if he was so good?
Daley has been coaching against a super team for the last few years in Origin, he would go OK as a club coach IMO.

he sacked Ivan because Ivan is a very astute and intelligent man.
When he says hes the coach, hes the coach.
What Gould wanted and was someone who will allow him to step in when he feels the need.
hence Anthony Griffith.
His career was almost over and out.
But with griffith, Gus can step in and out, instruct and mingle when he feels the need.
He has one of the best seats in the NRL house…commentator and so forth... he sees and heres a lot more than any other club CEO .... that knowledge and info.... its invaluable.
aaaaaand like clockwork, it came out this year, that gus is indeed running several of the sessions amongst the team.
surprise surprise.
He a great politician old Gussy.
Id be placing bets hes talking up Ivan so as to not burn any bridges down the line.
I reckon, hes got 10 more years in the game.
thats more than enough time for Penrith, and if nathan ends being the outstanding prodigy they believe he will be, Gus will want a very good relationship with him going forward also !
Gus isnt finished with Origin either.... ........ ........

in the short term... Ivan cleary has been earmarked for the tigers for a very long time.
some of you dont believe it but its true.
he was more than ready to move in last year... but it was a bad look for the club and a financial issue to pay JT out also.

i did believe it would happen last year....
i will very very verrrrrrry surprised if Ivan Cleary is not the next Tigers coach !

If you look at Daley's origin record he has a history of playing favourites with underperforming players. Not what we need at the Tigers.

That and coaching 3 games a year with the best in the country to choose from isn't much preperation for managing a struggling NRL club.

i like philgould but gee he speaks with a forked tongue.

what does he really mean- why did he punt cleary if he was so good.

It was two wasted years!!!! His So called Mantra isn't worth two bob

You missed the point Prmz made. He said just because we replaced the man, doesn't mean we have to scrap the idea. Taylor's idea was defence. No one is saying he achieved his goal, but the idea was right. So do we want the new coach to focus on defence, or were everyone's complaints about defence just a vehicle for people to justify getting him punted because they had it in for him?

I would think that any Coach that I any Coach that comes now or later will be working on our defence. Otherwise he'll most likely follow Taylor
As for Taylor I know he trumpeted a lot about defence, I don't believe he has a clue about what to do. Nope the next one does.
I don't care much, what he concentrates on as long as he gets some wins lol.

Gould let go of a few players who have won comps with other clubs already.
The reason Gould sacked Cleary is because he is no puppet.

Daley was a failure as NSW selector and has a similarly pathetic record as coach. With one SOO series win this century he would be a perfect fit for WT's. Time for a bring back JT thread.
