NRL unhappy with judiciary member

The NRL has been left disappointed by a judiciary member who inadvertently advised Ryan James' legal team seek a downgrade in the Gold Coast forward's high tackle case.

James was originally set to miss a week after being found guilty for the tackle that broke James Tedesco's jaw last weekend.

However, they successfully sought a downgrade after judiciary member Royce Ayliffe interfered to suggest the matter wasn't yet over after the handing down of the guilty verdict.

And now the NRL wants to speak with him.

"We are, however, disappointed that a judiciary panel member did make a statement following the verdict and we will be reminding all panellists of their roles and responsibilities as judiciary panellists under the NRL rules," an NRL spokesman told News Corp.

Despite this, the NRL said they were comfortable to correct process was followed.

It took just five minutes for Ayliffe, a former Sydney Roosters forward, and two other judiciary members to approve of the downgrade.

James was not the first player this season to successfully seek a downgrade after copping a guilty verdict, following Canterbury's David Klemmer taking the same action after a charge resulting out of a trial game earlier this year.

From League Live

Why do I get the feeling that the Tigers are going to cop the double standards of the judiciay because the NRL has now addressed the issue with the one of the members?

Why didn't the NRL address this after the Klemmer incident since they are so unhappy?

The whole Tedesco thing is just a really bad look for the NRL once again, firstly the charge and than you have a jury member telling the accused to change his plea.

OMG amateur hour at HQ once again

Was he supposed to hide the fact that James( or any player) had an avenue to appeal the grading.
If the chance was there , all players should be made aware of it.
Not saying anything about a particular case.
If the NRL doesn't like it, change the rule.
No point in them getting dirty on a judiciary member for pointing it out

They should. , but didn't or so it seems

The judiciary member should be sacked. Simple as that. He broke the rules of his position to give a favourable outcome to an accused.

Incredibly unprofessional, especially within a legal framework.

He should have said nothing at all and i'm sure he knows it.

It's solely up to James' lawyer to make any decision on appeals, strategy etc. That's what they're paid for…!

NRL is run by morons.
People will be watching what happens to Kaisano next week. Greenburg can't possibly pull another rigged process two weeks in a row.

As someone said recently on another thread… Multi-million dollar business, run by two-bit officials.

Laughing stock.

The NRL wonders why fans are deserting the game…look no further.

I always wonder where this ideal comes from 'fans are deserting the game'.

The Average Crowds are the Highest since the start of the NRL.
Memberships are the Highest since the start of the NRL.
TV Rights is the Highest since the start of the NRL.

Nope, it doesnt appear the Fans are Deserting the Game?!

Perhaps the NRL if it serious should suspend the judiciary member, a former player by the way, whose actions avoided James from being rightfully suspended.

Crowds are actually down to their lowest figure in over 10 years.

What, every game in 2016?
Compared to say 2013, that drought-filled year with not a drop of rain?

The average is measured over 192 games (160 so far this year), which is a pretty decent sample size to cover for weather events etc.

You were right re: your other two points though, and I do agree with your point in general. There is a hell of a lot wrong with the NRL at present, but a lot of these comments about fans leaving in droves aren't based in reality.
