I dont see much NYC, but Martin just tries too much.

Love him going to the line, but he needs to be more patient.

Martin has some talent but his kicking game is weak he is more a runner reminds me more of a rangi chase them a benji marshall. He mightvplay a bit of fg but wont be a a superstar

These boys ran hard, tackled hard, but lacked any sort of direction whatsoever from either of the halves. Those who are calling for Martin to be in FG needed to see that game, particularly his kicking game which was really poor. I put a fair bit of that down to Kimmorley, because Martin certainly wasn't playing like that last year under Webster.

As many have said here though, Sironen was very good. Ran some really good lines, got good footwork, and his ball-playing wasn't even on show. Good signs for just his 3rd game at that level, one to look out for.

Wests Tigers NYC side have fought bravely but suffered a 24-14 defeat to the North Queensland Cowboys in their Round 11 clash at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

Trailing 18-4 at the break courtesy of a first-half double from Viliame Kikau, Wests Tigers threatened to hit back in the second half with a much stronger start, but couldn’t come over the top of their opponents, who consolidated a top-four spot with the win.

Dominating possession and field position early, it was the visitors who opened the scoring after eight minutes when Kikau crashed through close to the posts.

Cooper Bambling had no problems with the extras to give his side a 6-0 lead and they were unfortunate not to double it soon after when Gideon Mosby found space down the left wing — only for his pass back on the inside to be spilled by Akeripa Tia Kilifi.

After some strong defence on their own line, Wests Tigers struck back in the 19th minute when half Veiru Mapesone dummied on last tackle before diving over out wide.

Matthew Woods was unable to convert, however, leaving the score at 6-4.

A spectacular length-of-the-field effort from Yamba Bowie and Gideon Mosby saw the Cowboys stretch their lead to 12-4 after 30 minutes, before a second try to Kikau seconds before the break saw the visitors take a 18-4 lead into the half-time sheds.

Starting the better of the two sides after the break, Wests Tigers reduced the margin in the 43rd minute when Te Maire Martin found Bayley Sironen on a good flat ball for his first try since making his Holden Cup debut last weekend. However, Woods again was unable to add the extras, leaving the score at 18-8 in the Cowboys’ favour.

Mosby appeared destined to grab his second of the day when he crossed the line in the 46th minute, before sensationally spilling the ball trying to plant it down. He would make up for it shortly after, though, with some sharp hands down the left wing allowing him to touch down in the 53rd minute and restore the Cowboys’ 16-point advantage.

John Tohi would peg one back for the home side in the 60th minute after a good offload from Mapesone but it would be all in vain for Kimmorley’s side, who squandered several good attacking opportunities late in the piece to suffer a 10-point defeat.

With the bye next weekend, Wests Tigers will look to bounce back in the winners circle on June 5 when they take on the Gold Coast Titans at Leichhardt Oval.

NYC FULL TIME — North Queensland Cowboys 24 (Kikau 2, Mosby 2 tries; Brambling 4/4 goals) def. Wests Tigers 14 (Mapesone, Sironen, Tohi tries; Woods 1/3 goals)

Bailey is a great talent and the club have very high hopes of him, just coming back from injury but the kid will carve up NYC.

Im a fan of Martin but Im suprised some said he would be promoted to state cup…

What a totaly inept display. I don't watch a lot of NYC due to it infuriating me as it is destroying everything I love about Rugby League….but I watched yesterday and was disgusted with what I saw.

If one player from this side makes first grade I'll be upset.

You caught them on a bad day, they are young hence have good days and bad Stryker. Those who have said he will be promoted to NSW cup this year are jumping the gun. It's really as simple as that. When I said posted this previously BB thought I was a lunatic…

Was probably the team's worst performance of the season thus far, and i'd say Martin's worst ever game in the NYC.

Yes he lacks consistency but just judging him on his worst game is just as bad as judging him on his best game.

Jonny I laughed at your suggestion Martin was simply too small to play at a higher level when other players who are smaller play at a much higher level. It's not about size, it's about technique… And I said there's only so much he can learn in NYC. There's very little defence so it's easy to stand out in attack, and when all the players can't defend it doesn't necessarily show his quality but that of the whole team. Perhaps his back rowers are leaving him isolated far too often etc.

Bailey had a very strong game. Not as big as his brother but it's good to see them play him straight in the back row, and that he seems to know a variety of angles to run. Curtis still only runs the same line. 3 line breaks with his first 3 runs in the game!

JJ Felise is still the standout in the pack and Pifeleti was strong too on debut. Hopefully both can dominate in the same way when they're playing against men and not boys despite their smaller frames.

The problem with our youngsters is they're nearly all on the small side. Look at that Cowboys prop Kikau compared to our boys and he's got that size advantage which makes it that much easier to power through the line. Man for man they were bigger than us, and their backs faster than us too. Same with the Roosters, Raiders, Panthers and juniors of many other clubs.

Of course that's not to say smaller players can't break through to the NRL, of course they can, but they've got to have a lot more technique (speed, footwork, leg drive etc) to make up for the lack of natural bulk, which puts them at a natural disadvantage.
