Wests Tigers NYC side have bounced back with an 46-6 victory over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in their Round 8 clash at ANZ Stadium.
Brett Kimmorley’s side led from start to finish thanks to five tries from outside backs Tom Satterthwaite and John Tohi, while Ivory Coast-born winger Obed Karwhin continued his rich run of try-scoring form to give the visitors an 40-point victory on the night.
After errors from both teams dominated the opening period, it was Wests Tigers who crossed for first points of the match after 16 minutes. A strong hit from Tyler Cassel brought about an error from the Bulldogs, with sharp hands from Watson Heleta allowing Karwhin to streak away and score his ninth try in five games for the winger.
Matthew Woods was unable to convert and the score remained 4-0.
Wests Tigers soon extended their lead even further in the 22nd minute when some scintillating attacking play on last tackle from halves Veiru Mapesone and Te Maire Martin allowed Satterthwaite to cross for his second try in as many weeks.
Again, Woods couldn’t convert and the scoreline remained 8-0.
The Bulldogs threatened to hit back not long after with repeat set on the visitors’ line, but they were unable to make their advantage count with points.
Kimmorley’s side soon made that count with another four-pointer before the break, with sharp hands to the right allowing John Tohi to score out wide.
Woods added the extras for a 14-0 lead after 33 minutes, which is how the score would read as both teams went to the half-time sheds at ANZ Stadium shortly after.
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs would strike back after the break when Piki Rogers crossed under the posts following some sharp handling — reducing the margin to 14-6 after Josh Bergamin added the extras from in front after 43 minutes of play.
The visitors would restore their 14-point advantage in the 55th minute when Esan Marsters burrowed his way over the line and extend it even further in the 58th minute when Satterthwaite took an intercept on his own line and raced 95m to score.
Two successful conversions from Woods saw Wests Tigers lead 26-6.
As Satterthwaite hobbled off with a foot injury, his side continued to keep their foot on the pedal with Tohi grabbing his second try of the night after being moved to the wing, with Mapesone finding him with a good cut-out ball after 67 minutes.
Watson Heleta scored his first of the night in his first game back from injury in the 71st minute as he burrowed down out wide, before two scintillating team efforts involving several players saw Tohi grab his third try and Junior Tatola also cross the line in the final 10 minutes of the match to blow out the scoreline for Kimmorley’s side.
Wests Tigers would finish with a 46-6 win as Marshall-King took over the kicking duties late for Woods, and will look to consolidate on that performance when they take on the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium in a fortnight’s time for their Round 9 clash.
