WESTS TIGERS BEAT EELS 30-18 IN U20S TRIAL
19/02/2011 7:03:28 PM
Wests Tigers overcame a slow start to record a 30-18 victory over Parramatta Eels in an U20s trial at Campbelltown Sports Stadium tonight.

Head Coach Grant Jones fielded two sides for the trial match with the first Wests Tigers team trailing 18-12 at half-time.

The Eels opened the scoring in the seventh minute when prop Jarrod Azar crashed over next to the posts. Five-eighth Jayden Tavita converted.

Parramatta stretched their lead to 10-0 when half-back Aidan Carney dived over for a soft try from dummy half. Tavita converted for a 12-0 lead after 10 minutes.

Wests Tigers opened their account with a try in the corner to centre Sean Craig. The try was converted by winger Justin Smith.

The Eels hit back two minutes later when winger Jon Pepa leapt high to defuse a crossfield bomb to score for a 16-6 lead. Tavita converted the try for an 18-6 lead.

Wests Tigers centre Matt Evans showed a good turn of foot when he raced away to score under the posts. Smith converted for an 18-12 scoreline which remained that way until half-time.

2nd Half
Wests Tigers got back to 18-16 when second-rower Sean Spence crashed over out wide. The try was converted by centre Tim Simona for an 18-18 scoreline.

Simona put Wests Tigers in front when he scored behind the posts. He converted his own try for a 24-18 scoreline.

Simona was in the thick of the action again when he made a break down the left flank before giving the final pass for winger Faleula Finau to score near the posts. Smith converted the try for a 30-18 lead.

Watched the full game with Kul and there were some promising signs, most notably the depth and some of the players who are eligible for SG Ball this year. The first named team which ran out was made up of the fringe players as well as players who I believe will still be eligible next year.

While the Tigers got away to a slow start, I thought Matt Groat looked ok out there in 38C heat. For a guy who will play SG Ball this year, he's got plenty of size and took 3 players with him on every run. The centre Matt Evans from Souths also looked alright and has good pace. The other player to impress was the winger, number 22, Joe Ulubai. He is powerfully built and went back on in the second half for another run.

Begovich and Roqica were strong off the bench too and both players started in the second half. The second half team was stronger and it showed in the reversal on the scoreboard. Defence was tighter and the attack was sharper. Liam Ayoub didn't play too badly, but Jacob Miller is clearly ahead of him after watching him play tonight. Shaun Spence worked well on the edges and scored a nice try. Tim Simona and Faleula Finau worked well on the left edge and Simons was a handful in the second half. Number 13, Jesse Su also looked promising out there.

Given that Curtis Sironen did not play, nor did Jacob Miller, this team potentially has a very strong halves combo. They certainly have some speed in the backline and some size and depth in the forward pack. The squad is yet to be finalised so next week's hitout against the Roosters should be interesting to watch.

None of those listed players are eligible for SG Ball this year..they are all turning 19 or 20 this year.

The only 17 - 18 year olds who have been training with NYC and may get a run after their SG Ball commitments finish are Tedesco and Nofoaluma(Wests) + Lovett and Sironen (Balmain)
