WESTS TIGERS BEAT TITANS 48-8 IN TOYOTA CUP
By Wayne Cousins at Skilled Stadium
Saturday, August 29, 2009

Wests Tigers moved into fourth place on the Toyota Cup ladder with a convincing 48-8 victory over the Gold Coast Titans at Skilled Stadium today.

The win takes Wests Tigers to 33 points with one round remaining before the finals. Brisbane slipped from fourth to fifth after losing to North Queensland last night.

Wests Tigers pushed aside their normal slow start to open the scoring in the fifth minute through hooker Chris Corby. Full-back Jake Mullaney converted for a 6-0 lead.

Six minutes later, prop Andrew Fifita added to his tryscoring tally with a try. Mullaney converted for a 12-0 lead.

Wests Tigers got their third try in the 18th minute when a crossfield kick by half-back and captain Darren Nicholls was spilt in-goal by a Gold Goast player for lock Matt Hyland to score.

Mullaney converted the try for an 18-0 lead.

The Titans opened their account when a grubber kick five metres before the line was dived upon by lock Scott McLennan.

Half-back Jordan Rankin failed to convert to leave the Titans trailing 18-4.

Second-rower Jason Schirnack then got in on the tryscoring action when he caught a crossfield bomb by Nicholls to score next to the posts.Mullaney converted for a 24-4 lead.

A crossfield kick into the sun made it hard for winger Joel Jackson to see the ball. Fortunately for the Titans, the ball bounced their way for winger Guy Borgas to score in the corner. The try was not converted for a 24-8 scoreline after 35 minutes.

A smart little grubber kick by Nicholls saw Mullaney chase the ball through to dive on it to score just before the dead ball line. Mullaney failed to convert for a 28-8 scoreline at half-time.

2nd Half
Mullaney was again in the thick of the action when he scored his second try off a kick for a 32-8 lead.

Andrew Fifita scored his second try when he finished off a break by Patrick Politoni to cross under the posts. Mullaney converted the try for a 38-8 lead.

Mullaney then grabbed his hat-trick when he made a break and raced away to score out wide for a 42-8 lead.

A grubber kick by Mullaney five minutes before full-time saw centre Joel Wisbey chase it through to score in the corner for a 46-8 lead.

Mullaney converted the try from the sideline for a 48-8 lead with three minutes remaining.

The Titans were left a man short in the 78th minute when Ryan James was sent to the sin bin for not allowing Schirnack to play the ball 10 metres out from the Gold Coast line.

From the penalty, prop Aaron Woods almost scored near the posts but was pulled down a metre short. It would have been Woods' first try of the season but the much talked about beard was shaved off during the week as the talented prop focuses now on the finals.

Wests Tigers 48 (Jake Mullaney 3, Andrew Fifita 2, Chris Corby, Matt Hyland, Jason Schirnack, Joel Wisbey tries; Mullaney 6 goals) d Gold Coast Titans 8 (Scott McLennan, Guy Borgas tries).
