Oils

Rob Hirst has a shack two doors away from me. He has a chat when here and about. I have their Bed are Burning vinyl album unopened.

What is the use of that. Get it out and crank it up.

The only album never opened. I will get Rob to autograph one day. I bought for political content of the songs plus I think it was going to be their last on vinyl.

Oils lost all credibility when Garret put on a tie, no thanks

I campaigned for him at his first attempt about 1984 for the Nuclear Disarmament Party, he only lost by a hair's breadth. I painted Sydney red so to speak but won't disclose exactly how.

Even so …they are still a brilliant rock band and the best band you'll ever see live .

Can't quite go with best as there was some bloody good competition around, Chisel being a rung above for mine before the split, but the Oils really pump and get plenty of airplay at my place. Got a good amp and quality Jamo speakers so still plenty of volume left by the time the neighbors get an ear full. The missus just shakes her head.

The music is great, but I can no longer cop Garret banging on about the environment after he sold out horribly as a government minister. He gave up his principles at that point and can no longer try to pass himself off as morally superior while lecturing others.

For me, Chisel where better than anybody else in the world from 79 to 83 or so. Their recent albums have been good also, but Jimmy can't sing the old songs the way he used to.

Yeah, played East a couple of days ago for the first time in a while, what an album. No surprise though, with a few good song writers amongst them, particularly Don Walker. Mismanagement cost them real international fame when they went to the US and with a general anti industry approach, it soon had them saying, stuff this, let's get outta here. Their anger and thoughts on the very poor representation they received gave us You Got Nothing I Want, so maybe it was worth it

I'm not one for the nostalgia of a way past their peak band playing myself, particularly live, as it just can't cut the mustard. Happy though to get a bit of Barking Spiders going instead.

Last time I saw The Oils live was in Gladstone about 4 months before Pete joined Labour

It was funny he bagged the Yarwun Alumina plant which was under construction at the time and probably about 20 % of the fans booed him as they were Yarwun contractors / workers

Everyone was up and rocking it out and loving it within 2 songs and all had been forgotten

All except one person , my sister in law

She was fast asleep LOL

The Oils were a band I've grown into as I've become older. Didn't mind them in my teens but I was more interested in listening to grunge and metal than anything else.

Many of their songs tell great stories. The Wittenoom asbestos mines in Blue Sky Mining, European colonisation in Short Memories, Armistice Day speaks for itself.

It takes great skill to write songs about these sorts of subjects and write great music to it.
