Great pictures, thank you!

That was back when our beloved Leichhardt Oval was considered "state of the art"

Interesting to see the scoreboard didn't exist then, anyone know what year it was built?

I would also like to see some pictures of Leichhardt before the 70's make-over if anybody has any…

1974? Could have fooled me. Looks like it was taken last season.

These are great memories.
Thanks for posting.

PS: that lucky kid who stole the corner post - that was the go, gotta be 1st to get it, cuttting it real fine so as to be real late in the game, real close to full time, but before any other kid could get there !!

I was at that Souths game in 76…remember it vividly, theres footage on youtube

Interesting no scorebard at LO in 74...thought it was heritage listed or something....its younger than me.
Tuff few first weeks for Balmain 74, first 2 games away....62 - 5 against wests rd 1 lidcombe.

I'm only speculating but they changed the ground direction around this time so perhaps it was elsewhere located and was moved some time after this.

Not 100% sure but I don't think thats the hill you're looking at.
Think the pic was taken before they changed the direction of the ground.
Would have been taken in front of the old stand behind the posts.
Looks like they had goalposts laying on the gound ready to be erected as well (where you're thinking the hill is)
It's funny how your memory goes but I've been going there since I was a kid in the mid sixties and can't recall the scoreboard not being there.

Gee the more I think about it the more I am confused - remember going to Amco cup and sure it was changed then!
My excuse is you were able to drink heaps in those days

hi CK Tiger - it has to be the hill, look at the seating and the position of the lights, we are looking at the northe eastern end of the ground.

Yeah I think the Amco Cup was based there because of the improvements - it was the best ground in the comp at the time because of the lighting. But the re-alignment definitely took place in the 70s so my guess is that they moved the scoreboard after the photo but I have nothing to support that. For all I know the scoreboard was built after the photo…

Yeh the light towers give it away….its the hil minus the scoreboard.....I thought the direction of the field was changed a lot earlier than this, but apparently it was the 70s

74 was the Amco cups first season...so Im thinking the lights there are very new

Here is a link that might answer a few questions Pre 1974, & i agree there should some place to preserve the history

Thanks for that Tigerjet - if I had to put my life on it I would say the Australia v Israel pictures might have been taken at the old Sydney Sports Ground (now SFS).

I love the shot from 1934, you clearly pick that that's Leichhardt because of the still familiar terrace houses peaking over the fence!

Yeah a great game, I was one of the kids on the bike track in front of where Geoff Foster scored the winning try (although I can't make myself out in the pic). I remember my mate Callum almost got killed just before half time when Terry Fahey came charging out of bounds. Wests got up 17-14, the lead changing 3 times in the last 5 minutes … Terrific Memories !

I was at both of those games too Ink - the Souths game was a classic - if i remember rightly Terry Fahey tore the magpies apart down the left wing. The Balmain game i sat in front of the scoreboard behind the posts with my best mate who was/is an avid tigers supporter - he didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

I wasnt at that game but if it is the one I am thinking of Piggins scored one of the all-time great tries for Souths to give them the lead with a couple of minutes to go before Foster scored the winning try for Wests. They played that Piggins try over and over and justly so, it was a beauty.

Was on the hill for that game in 76 and still remember it well, the late try gave Souths a 13-12 lead, Wests took a short kick off and lanky Russell Mullins leapt and battered the ball back to support and Geoff Foster scored from the ensuing set, Ron Giteau potted the extras to make it 17-13.
