Opportunity knocks for Mitch Brown

Mitch Brown is used to waiting for an opportunity. And when it knocks, he more often than not delivers.

Such was the case on Friday night when Brown turned in an impressive performance on the left wing. The strong depth at Wests Tigers means quality players like Brown have had to wait patiently for their turn.

Based on the evidence seen against Souths, Brown may well stay there as Lote Tuqiri recovers from an arm injury. His form was reminiscent of what he produced at full-back in Wests Tigers’ finals campaign last September.

Leaping high to defuse a crossfield bomb on his tryline. Showing great desperation in fielding a grubber kick behind his posts and getting back into the field of the play. Sliding over to score off a great pass by half-back Tim Moltzen was just all in a night’s work for Brown.

Like Brown, team-mate Matt Utai is another making the most of his chances. Picked up by Wests Tigers in January after playing park footy for Auburn Warriors last season, Utai hasn’t taken a backwards step on the right wing. The impending return of Beau Ryan from injury is a good selection headache for Sheens.

As for Brown playing full-back, Wade McKinnon produced his best game for Wests Tigers on Friday night in the number one jersey after being plagued by injuries late last season.

Brown realises it is time to produce his A game.

“We have got some really good depth. There are some good players here in the U20s and NSW Cup teams who just can’t get a start at the moment,’’ Brown said.

“It is a good opportunity for me. I just want to keep playing on the big stage. I want to try and get my foot in the door and secure a spot.”

Very much a confidence player, Brown said its not hard to be inspired by the brilliance shown by five-eighth Benji Marshall against Souths.

“When you see one of the boys playing well or doing good things, it makes you want to get involved and makes you want to lift your game and jump on the front foot and get going,’’ he added.

Brown certainly did that. And more.

glad to see he is making most of his opportunity.
looking forward to see him have alot of long runs down the sideline and cause opponents some grief.
