OUR YOUNG TALENT?

Every one is going on how we have such great young talent coming through, and there is no need to buy as they will fill all the gaps in the next 2 years. Yet when i look at what we have all i see is a lot of very talented, short and light weight players, this is a real problem i believe as most of the other NRL sides are producing much taller and heavier players. Take our u20s last year they had very little size to call on and that was there down fall, and our 1st grade team has had this problem for many years. I hope the u20s next year get some size to go with all the talent we have.
does any one else see this as a problem.
 
Yes, on the surface it does seem to be a bit of a problem but the downfall of the NYC team this season was critical injuries. Losing Brown and Fiagatusa before the Raiders semi was a death-blow, they were our leaders. Plus Brooks got injured in that same game too didn't he from memory? Take the 3 most effective players out of any side, at any level, and you are basically on a hiding to nothing.

Manly have had quite a small pack of forwards for the last few years in the NRL but they work for each other and compensate in other areas to make up for the lack of sheer size. The way the game is heading these days though it would be great to have some high-leaping, super athletic wingers on our books. Players such as Daniel Tupou for the Roosters, he is basically useless but can vertical leap over a house so is a valuable commodity in this day and age of monotonous, relentless high kicks.
 
You cannot rely solely on juniors….you must buy experience and have a regular turnover of both year to year
 
We still need to get the right mix of experienced heads around the young fellas in the right positions

We have a good mix in the forwards , but the mix in the halves and backs is a concern
 
I think we're well positioned heading into next season and beyond. We have some top young talent in key positions being 1, 6, 7 and 9, and with some more experienced signings, I think we'll be ok.
 
We have good youth in positions where youth, speed and lack of Sheens influence are needed.

We can buy the rest

I THINK WELL COME SOMEWHERE BETWEEN TENTH AND 13TH NEXT YEAR.And make the finals the year after.We are far from a disaster.Caps sorry.
 
Confidence comes from our youngest players being blooded before their time yet still somehow being the shining lights of our season. Look at Simona/Nofo/Sue/Teddy/Koro/Brooks/Ava, you don't feel confident we are building something good?

No one is saying we are top 4 bound, and no one is saying we should shut down recruitment.

And a heap of experience in the right positions Hodgson at 1 ,Prince at 7 ,Galea ,Buckets ,Skando , Payten in the forwards

We had the mix right , 2014 we are probably two or three players short of having a well balanced squad

The only thing is that it is hard to know how good they will go.

I have more faith though in some of the youngsters than some of our senior players. I'd prefer the best players to be chosen each week despite how many games they have played.
 
The main point BP Tiger is trying to make is that we are consistently undersized against other teams in all grades and we need to start recruiting or developing the Mose Masoe's, Sam Kasiano's etc. to match the top teams in the competition. In this day and age we can't get away with having Fulton, Thompson and Halatau on the field at the same time because we will continue to get rolled up the middle.

Place my faith in Hard work and Systems.

Most here know of my respect of the Bellamy / Melbourne storm.

(Decent crop of youngsters helps though)

u hit the nail right on the head, and remember the old quote a good big man will always beat a good little man.
 
I agree with OP that size is a bit of an issue….at the moment.
Where we have a leg up on a number of clubs is that our young pack still have a lot more growing to do.
Sue, Ava and Siro in particular will definitely be putting on a decent amount of size in the next few years with potential to be monsters.
The addition of Tupau and Patterson definitely helps bolster our pack, and if Galloway stays fit we won't get trampled on like we did this year.

Size definitely is not everything, look at the Warriors, big pack but didn't make the top 8\. We really need to focus on the development of our spine, which is shaping up to be very very good with Tedesco, Moses/Austin, Brooks and Farah. Only issue I see is that we don't have a backup for Brooks...unless Moltzen steps up
 
Yes, our current crop of juniors aren't exactly monsters, but the next crop look to have a few bigger boppers there. Pifeleti Pifeleti and JJ Felis to name a couple.

Sirro is huge, his younger brother is even bigger. I'm sure there's others too. That's some size to look forward to.

Fiagatusa, Brown and Sue will also continue to fill out, and while not tall they will be very powerfully built.

Marion Seve could fill out nicely too, especially given his complicated medical history.

It's the backs that size can make a difference. Backs tend to be taller and stronger these days. Every club is trying to create their own Folau. We have Mr T and there's other like John Sila, and Canberra have a few like Lee. When you think of Mr T being one of our backup wingers we have a fairly big squad.

Simona may put on a bit of size if he is fit by the 9's he may have enough preseason to bulk a little. but' he's more powerful than he looks. Koro is fairly big and fast. Nofo isn't huge but runs like Utai but jumps much better. Not looking too bad. Someone like MR T, John Sila and those Add Austin to the halves and the team is bigger than last season.
 
I've never actually seen Bayley (Bailey?) Sironen, but like above keep seeing people comment on how big he is, I think I actually even heard Curtis say he was bigger than him! Is this actually true? I believe he is going into the 20's next season, but if he is actually bigger than Curtis, that's pretty extraordinary, because Curtis is already a massive young man.

Would be interesting to also hear people's thoughts who may have seen these guys earlier on on who is possibly seen to be the better player? I know it's very hard to gauge or compare because honestly I think Siro will be huge for us next season and is quickly becoming a very very good young footballer, whereas Bayley is much younger, less experience, etc.
