One that no one has really mentioned but has gone really well when i have seen him play is Jy hitchcox. He has heaps of pace and a great pair of hands, and his defence is solid. seen him get away some great gidley type passes to Mr T, would like to see him given a go in the top side.
Others thoughts.

Certainly has good pace.Havent seen much of the gidley type passes but he surely will be in the nines tournament.

not too sure how he has gone this year in state cup, although i have read some encouraging reports. there have been some forum members who have selected jy in their f/g side recently.
the clip is 4-5 years old but it does show pretty good speed and evasive skills with a 'gidley' like offload as well.
may be worth a go before the season finishes, we have nothing to lose and who knows.

He has never been in our plans and his failure to secure a starting spot in State Cup the past few years shows this.

I dont know why he isnt regarded high enough to be a regular starter in State Cup and even pushing for NRL because ive alway liked the look of him. Small but classy.

he is a good second tier player only.
I think people underestimate the gap between the grades

Don't understand how you can make such a categorical comment when he hasn't played at that level and has consistently outplayed players who have played at that Level. I reckon he would go well at NRL level. Speed is a major weapon in Rugby League and something in the past few seasons Tigers have had very little of. Hitchcox would be the 1st or 2nd fastest player in the club. Would be between him and Koribete. On top of this he is evasive and loves to keep the ball alive. Has a great set of hands and is very sound in defence. He also plays hard and gives 100%. He suffered a major ankle injury last season with Balmain Ryde when in great form and has obviously worked very hard to get back into that form. With all the injuries Tiges have had this year he would have been a great option to have given a run at Left wing, left back or fullback.

that's a vid of some of his plays from State Cup this season,

Whats his stats size wise ??

He doesn't look real big to play centres with that lack of size he would struggle to handle many centres defensively

I've seen some good play from him but he also looks pretty small. If he put on some size and maintained the speed he could be okay.

For a centre ,his height worries me more than anything ,especially in the modern game

Seriously NSW state cup has lots of 100kg plus players. . PLayers that have both played NRL and players who will play NRL. The difference in size between NRL and State Cup is not huge.

The problem isn't so much size StanJohnno but its the size matched with skill in the NRL compared to NSW Cup

And can only compare it to Qld Cup (as I don't get so much NSW Cup) and a lot of the bigger centres have size but lack the skill or have learnt the ability to use their size correctly

Apart from maybe two or three their wouldn't be many centres under the old 6 foot mark playing in the NRL (Junior Sau is about the only bloke I can think of off the top of my head)

When you have a significant height advantage because of the height and reach advantage you can ride a hit and still pop a pass ,much in the same way Gene Miles used to

Fair call Happy. In saying that I doubt any back in the Tigers State cup team gets more balls away in attack once tackled then Hitchcox. Keeping the ball alive is one of the positives in his game. Also centre is just one of 3 positions he is adept in. Classy fullback and winger as well. A real negative on our game if players are punished for not being tall. Ability, speed and tenacity can overcome that if given a chance.

SJ I'm not even sure what his weight /height even is ,try looking for it but had no luck but he looks under 6 foot

From the highlights I saw he looks like he not too bad out of dummy half ,especially with those mouse trap plays

Maybe the club , (if his defence is ok) could look at playing him as a back up dummy half and really utilize that speed out of dummy half and play real direct

The thing that really stood out for me was how Luani seemed to struggle early on with the pace of the game in his first appearance against Parra. Have watched a fair bit of him in State Cup and it was never an issue. Whilst I understand where Happy is coming from I really think it is the pace of the game that players from lower grades have a problem with initially rather than the size. Similar to the step up from NRL to Origin.

Playing wing and playing centre are two completely different issues

Winger doesn't have to be concerned about his opposite winger throwing to the man outside

Centre doesn't tie up his man ,and the winger then more than likely has to either commit to tying up the centre and hope he can shutdown the play or its try time

Defending at centre IS the hardest of any position in the NRL ,you have decoys going left right and centre ,you have to be careful the ball player doesn't kick in behind ,changes of angles

Having to be concerned your opposition centre is 4-5 inches and possibly heavier and taller definitely doesn't help

Wouldn't be many centres under 95kgs

I saw a lot of Hitchcox in 2010 when he was playing NSW Cup for Melbourne Storm.

That team contained Dane Chisholm, Gareth Widdop, Luke Kelly, Rory Kostjaysn, Kenneath Bromwich, Willie Isa, Justin O'Neill, Robbie Rochow, Matt Duffie and Bryan Norrie.

Widdop was the fullback at the start of the season, Chisholm was a utility who could play five-eighth, wing and fullback. Hitchcox was a benchie. By midseason he had forced Widdop out of his preferred fullback role and into five-eighth.

Hitchcox held the position for the rest of the year. He was a little scratchy at times under the high ball, but his speed, agility and passing game were all very good. His first few steps were lightning fast, got outside his man quickly and often.

Chisholm was a freak in attack, reminded me a lot of Greg Alexander, could create something out of absolutely nothing just using his feet.

I was excited when we landed both, and disappointed when we let Chisholm go. Chisholm has played a few tests for France and a few NRL games for the Storm.

He's at Manly now.

Hitchcox would only be good on the wing at NRL level.

Simona is struggling in defence, which is very noticeable when he's at centre.

His defence issues are barely noticed on the wing.

Half the trick to being a good defender on the wing is positioning alone, not anything tackle related.

Tuqiri was a great wing defender before he went to Union, since he returned he is the biggest culprit in the NRL for running up and in from a long way off his wing, which just isolates your centre massively if you don't shut the play down.
