Packer

Russell Packer is still suffering pain related to the foot fracture he had surgery on in 2019; still reviewing with specialists. Tigers reported he was increasing his running load in January, but this must have been met with ⬆️ pain. Some talk medical retirement may be considered

or on Survivor?
Mcqueens runs out this year . Even on 400k , with what’s already been paid , he’s probably only got 250k outstanding . Packer has a year to run .But I’d rather him get fit and we keep him . He was great prior to last year

Only at the WT......

Madge has made it clear to Packer, Reynolds, Mats (medically retired), McQueen they have no future at the club...He made it clear they can look elsewhere...but they have not budged...why?, 'cause no other club wants them and/or they are happy to see out their WT contract sitting on the bench or playing CC...

In 2019 the same message was put to Elijah Taylor, but he has responded in a positive fashion and he noticeably lifted his game at the back end of 2019.....I'll be keen to see how JRey plays in the trials, he should only be played at 5/8 to be accurately assessed. Packer can pack his bags, Mcqueen showed in the 9's his is slow to react to fast moving offences....truly our worst dud signings ever

We got this update on him 3 weeks ago too..

Russell Packer (foot) is also progressing well as he increases his running load and responds well on-field as a result.

May have re-injured since?

I don't wish injury on the bloke to medically retire him, despite him being woefully underwhelming.

Yea, seems to be the case. Thought it was his toe that was bothering him originally. I'm sure we'll hear more about it soon enough.

Same issues as Keefy had ??

Turd toe

Hose usually fixes that issue Ink .....maybe they are more precious than you think lol

If any of this is true we are back in trouble again in regards to spending a minimum amount of our salary cap

Lol, cmon Happy. You should know that no club will ever be in a position of being penalised for not spending the cap minimum. At the very minimum clubs will front load a player or two.

Yeah but who do you trust to front load ??

I was happy to see ET improve his game. Even Eisenhuth improved a little after being dropped to reserve grade. Other blokes seem happy to wait out their contract.

I haven't read anything that suggests this injury was pre-existing? Isn't that still the criteria? Or since Sammy B are we just wiping anyone who's a bit hurt somewhere nearabouts where they've been a bit hurt before?

This would be a Win Win scenario for both parties.

Medical retirement however needs to be realistic thing

Follow the Sam Burgess precedent.

Isn't the requirement for medical retirement that it was not pre-existing? Maybe I misunderstand.

You can’t medically retire a player if they had the injury that’s caused them to stop playing before you signed them.

In this case Packer got this injury midway through last year which is well after we signed him, so we could medically retire him if it’s a career ending injury.

I get it now, Jirsky was asking was he injured before, implying if he wasn't what's the holdup. It's a Thursday but it feels like it should be Friday, afternoon Friday.

It’s always tragic to see a player reach the end of their career through injury. Especially a player who has given and achieved so much.
Was he contracted with a potentially career ending injury?

You’re exactly right. Supreme turf toe, bit of arthritis and dodgy ankle ligaments...

I really do feel for the guy, firstly, and secondly - even if just to take the early brunt and inspire a bit of a winner’s passion in Aloiai & Mikaele - hope he’s still able to punch out a full year

Med retirement isn’t on the cards at this VERY early stage. Rusty doesn’t wanna finish playing the game he loves and doctor’s today confirmed it’s not exactly life threatening. However, is a new injury and of a similar chronic nature that has seen many successful cases go through HQ.

No he picked up the injury playing reserve grade for us last year.

I don’t think turf toe is something you would get during a game? It’s caused by the toe being ripped away. Very painful, takes months to mend .

I think it sounds similar to Mats. Not life threatening but an injury that may be too difficult to cure at his age. Unfortunately rugby league is a business and he is costing alot to sit on the sidelines.

Who says it’s turf toe? All I know is he injured his foot in reserve grade last year, had surgery on it but is still struggling to run. Before the injury and surgery he didn’t have any issues with it.

I’m thinking he must have injured his foot at the Dragons and that’s why he was moved on? Interestingly Ivan the terrible named 5 captains. Of course Pecker and Reynolds were obviously an instant success story for the WT and their leadership skills so badly requiring them to be thrust into the captaincies. After picking 5 captains, how is it possible that Ivan could overlook Mbye? I’m guessing if there were 6 captains the next one picked would have been Moses for sure. It must have been difficult for Ivan to keep it to just 5?
