Packer

I didn't think it was all that bad myself. Yes the hits were inaccurate but I've been longing to see a Tiger clean up a few opponents even if it gives away the odd penalty.

The sin bin was cheap and still catches players out, though Packer hasn't had any practice with the new interpretation.

Packer had an adrenalin rush because he was back on the paddock playing football,he has had a really bad foot injury that took months and months to get over...
I know many are condemning him for his performance, but I personally would give him the chance again to rectify his errors...on his day he would help this young team and he can produce good football when right...its just a matter of knowing when he is right...

Yeah i was pretty annoyed at him, but now i kinda feel sorry for him. The game has passed him by, and while he was selected he was trying hard to make the most of his shot. Unfortunately it wasn't good enough and it was ill disciplined which i think should pretty much spell the end of his NRL career.

Feel a bit sorry for Packer he made as many defensive errors as Geo's favourite Nofolouma normally does and he still gets a run each week....After the ban straight back in for Packer

Every player needs the opportunity to redeem themselves after a disaster but happy to leave that decision to the coach.

He’ll be better for the run although the suspension doesn’t help. Come back with a great attitude

The high shot was just bad timing, mainly due to how long between his last game and this one. The sin bin was warranted for the other incident.

I'd give him another go. We need the aggro, just not the stupidity.

Why Packer is grateful to be playing again

Russell Packer insists he never gave up hope of playing in the NRL again after ending a 15-month absence when he returned for Wests Tigers in Saturday night's loss to Canberra.

Packer only saw 12 minutes of action during an eventful second half stint in which he was sin-binned for a professional foul and later placed on report for a high shot on Raiders second-rower Joseph Tapine.

The ensuing penalty enabled Canberra captain Jarrod Croker to secure the win for his side with a 68th-minute penalty goal and Packer is now facing a suspension after being charged with a grade three careless high tackle.

However, Packer was upbeat after recovering from operations last year and during the 2020 pre-season on his foot that threatened to force him into premature retirement.

"It's been a tough journey," Packer said. "I had a surgery in August last year on my foot and had some other complications and needed to go for a second operation earlier this year.

"Like anyone who gets injured you go through ups and downs mentally. That's the beauty of this game. If you persevere you get your chance and opportunities."

It was suggested to Packer that a medical retirement that would have guaranteed his contract for the next two seasons but he wanted to continue playing.

The 30-year-old had already missed two seasons after being jailed in 2013 for assault and has turned his life around to win the RLPA Male Academic Player of the Year award in 2019.

"I've got pretty good at not listening to people over my life," he said. "I went and saw a couple of different doctors and had a few roadblocks. There is no doubt about that. My recovery from the first surgery had some lingering complications.

"I'm a pretty optimistic person. I have been through a few things in my life where I probably thought things were going to happen where most people wouldn't. I guess that's a belief.

"I've had a lot of support from all my family, my partner, and immediate family. And all the support staff here [at Wests Tigers], the previous physios and new guys this year. When you go through any long injury or major operation it is always a journey.

"It's hard for any athlete. You go through a lot of emotions, it just a long time you are out and you go through a lot of pain. It's not something you can do on your own.

"After the journey I have been on I am just grateful to be back on the field and grateful that my body is able to play again."

Packer said he was disappointed with his comeback performance but the Kiwi international is confident he can improve.

"I need to do better than to go out there, and even at the end of the game with Joey [Tapine], I committed to the tackle [and] he was low.

"I gave away the penalty and they go up by eight. It's definitely not good enough from someone of my experience.

"But after the last year, it was quite satisfying just to get back after some adversity, after different surgeries on my foot, to be available for selection and get back on the field."

I think he deserves us to stick with him.
He seems keen to prove people wrong and that’s always a good starting point.
No player with his background wants to end a impressive career in this way.
We have 4 players in this position that are going to try to go out on a high and that may work out for the club.
I'm sticking with Packer, Lawrence, Reynolds and Benji.

No, Packer had his chance and blew it.
A few mistakes you can forgive, we all make them, but one run in 13 minutes?

Unless that was his instruction, to tackle hard and do no hitups, then i wouldn't pick him again.

We were defending for most of that 13 minutes to be fair

True. That action resulting in him being sin binned was ridiculous. There is no way in the last 20 years you can do that and not be sin binned.

I think the recent rule changes have made it even more important for every player to remain really disciplined. For instance, you simply can't afford to lay on players or slow the ruck down and give away 6 more tackles, you simply can't afford to do anything that changes the momentum swing in the game because if you give away that momentum your team is under incredible defensive pressure. For the Tigers in particular, dumb football can be very costly and not something we can afford if we want to win games.
Besides this characteristic, I am afraid that Russ is just too unfit, slow and cumbersome, he does not have the lateral movement required from a forward in the new NRL. He is an old fashioned front rower and just unfortunately off the pace.

I cant imagine why

Than you just are short on imagination mate.

Not short of imagination i just dont believe in miracles.Benji was a great player but that was long ago Chris was crueled by injury but tries hard but with little impact. The less said about Packer the better.Grub tries very hard and is the pick of them.
All of them are past their best

Packer’s last two games have been very disappointing. We can’t afford to carry a player who gives away so many points. He has a year to go on his contract but I wish we could get rid of him now.
