Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens is almost certain to finalise a new two-year deal with the Tigers within the next week after the club's board last night gave its backing to re-sign him.
The Herald understands that negotiations between chief executive Stephen Humphreys and Sheens are so far advanced that last night's board approval, the final hurdle in the way of a deal, means the signing of the contract is a formality, giving the Tigers a big boost before tomorrow night's clash with South Sydney.
Humphreys, who has been negotiating with Sheens since late last year, recommended the board re-sign the game's longest-serving coach, and the directors gave in-principle approval. Effectively, Humphreys now has board approval to finalise the deal, and, with Sheens having all but decided to extend his tenure with the club, it looks a done deal.

Five-eighth Benji Marshall has played under only one coach in the NRL team and told the Herald recently he wanted the club to sign Sheens until for the remainder of his career. Marshall is contracted to the club until the end of 2015 but will be content, like the rest of the players, with a two-year extension for the 622-game coach, who was off contract at the end of the season.
Humphreys is a huge fan of Sheens', and it was always assumed that provided the coach was happy, he would re-sign. There had been links between Sheens and South Sydney but they died down in recent months as the club chased Wayne Bennett. Souths are still fighting for Bennett's signature, along with the more highly fancied Brisbane and Newcastle, but Souths' back-up now seems to be an untried head coach, at least in the NRL, Wigan's former Melbourne assistant Michael Maguire.
Sheens coached the Tigers to their only premiership as a merged entity, in 2005, but had come under pressure after the club failed to reach the finals in four consecutive seasons. Sheens signed a one-year contract last season, but after the club's success last year, Humphreys began negotiations to extend his tenure.
The Tigers were defeated by the eventual premiers St George Illawarra by one point in the preliminary final last year in a match that went to the final minute. Officials no doubt see a golden opportunity to win a premiership in the next few seasons with a relatively young roster and have decided that a change in coach might offer more problems than solutions.
Meanwhile, Paul Vautin, who knows a thing or two about winning against the odds in State of Origin, has described NSW coach Ricky Stuart's declaration that he would be happy to win one game of this year's series as ''the greatest smother in rugby league history''.
Vautin coached Queensland in 1995, when the Maroons were given next to no chance of winning the three-match series. They had lost most of their stars because of the Super League war.
''Ricky Stuart is one of the most ferocious competitors in the history of the game,'' Vautin said. ''He was like that as a player and he's the same way as a coach. You only had to see him on the sideline during the Channel Nine coverage, when he was coaching the Roosters or the Sharks, to know how much he hated it when things went wrong for his team and they didn't win.

Wests Tigers captain Robbie Farah has no fear Tim Sheens will be snatched away from the club despite the coach remaining uncontracted for next season.
Sheens flew out of Sydney on Thursday ahead of the Tigers' clash with Gold Coast at Skilled Park, his future still unclear after several meetings with CEO Stephen Humphreys.
The longest-serving coach in the NRL with more than 600 matches to his name, Sheens wants to stay at the joint venture club and expects to have a deal tabled by the end of the month.
But there is speculation his former club Penrith may make a late swoop for his services if, as expected, they part company with Matt Elliott.
"Our negotiations are ongoing. We've got 24 hours to a game, I'm not going to be speculating about where I'm going or what's happening," Sheens said on Thursday.
"There's been too much of a circus about those sorts of things this week so I'm not going to get into that."
"I'm not drawing that sort of publicity - don't want to either."
Sheens has been at the Tigers since 2003, guiding them to an unexpected grand final victory in 2005.
The joint venture club then missed the play-offs for four years before reaching the finals last year.
Farah believes Sheens will want to stay on to complete the rebuilding job he began several years ago.
"I've never been worried about Tim leaving. I don't think he will leave," Farah said.
"He's built a great squad here and put a lot of hard work in. Hopefully over the next couple of years he will see the benefits of the hard work he's put in."
Meanwhile, Sheens has warned his Tigers to expect a desperate Titans outfit at Skilled Park on Friday night.
Gold Coast are last, having won just once this season and face finals oblivion if their run of outs doesn't end soon.
"They are going to be very, very keen. Where they are on the competition table means nothing," Sheens said.
"They've had their issues with injury and haven't been out of many games and they will be up for this."
"You don't get many bonuses when you are away. The crowd give you hell and there are going to be plenty of issues for us to overcome."
Farah added: "I think that (Gold Coast's 1-4 record) makes it an even bigger challenge."
"Teams coming off a loss are a lot more desperate. Every away game, especially up there, is hard and we're in for a tough night."

Hopefully Sheen's future will be sorted very soon, the media likes to have something to focus on (apart from the actual league played on the field) they thrived on the Bennett speculation, now the focus is on the prospective Souths coach, once that is sorted it will be Sheens turn, the team can do without that distraction.
Word recently the Wigan Warriors (Michael Maguire –> Souths ) will make a play for Sheens

With Bennett & now McGuire committed,canny Sheens has got himself into the enviable position of being the only "proven"(& I use that term very loosely,believe me)coach remaining on the market.In a sellers market he cld get a little pricey,with the only alternatives for both Tigers & other clubs seeking a new coach being either unproven prospects ,or already proven NRL failiures…
What that means for the Tigers is if he chooses to go elsewhere,the likely back up plan is some combination of Gentles/Folkes,as the Browns/Taylors/Stewarts etc simply arent up to it,whilst as Kearney has shown if yr going to gamble on the unknown u may as well do that in-house.
