I know forwards are late bloomers but, what happened to "if there good enough there old enough". Not arguing for and against just asking?

He missed a lot of tackles in the NYC last year. Not good enough for first grade yet, at least not decent minutes in first grade.

You'd like to see how he handles at least 2 months of NSW Cup before we throw him to the wolves

But if he kills it in the trials you never know

The problem is if we picked him and we get a few injuries and we need him to play big minutes it could do more harm than good

I think we pushed Groat and BMM in before they were ready and the results weren't good

Roach came up and played in Reserve Grade as a youngster from Wollongong. I recall Peter Tunks attempting to rough him up but Roach stood his ground and delivered punches to Tunks. Both were sent off but even then it was clear Roach would be one of the best and toughest we'd ever had at Balmain. Bruiser Maguire and Bruce Sinclair (from Nowra and West Tamworth respectively) had that x factor which made them stand out among second row forwards. Both were tough and uncompromising and a tackle Maguire put on a Knights prop which left that player convulsing under the posts at Leichhardt was one of the hardest I had seen. It followed Steve Edmed suffering a broken jaw from this same Knights forward (late and high swinging arm of course),

The point is SImon Dwyer was a more recent player with that x factor and no garbage in his game. A tragic waste of a fine forward and man. More recently, Bayley Sironen has demonstrated that uncompromising style of play. Let's hope he gets a chance this year in the NRL.

The best part of that Paws i was sitting at half way opposite the grandstand and Blocker and Tunks where niggling and throwing them all the way to the dressing room after being tossed off.Blocker intimidated Tunks all the way a star was born.We need someone who stands up to the opposition Dwyer could have been that man but we desperately need one i hope you right about Sirro

Is the Sinclair you refer to the young guy who did his knee in at Leichhardt and never played again? I thought he played many years in the juniors?

Bruce went on to play for Norths which was a shame because he was a fine player and both he and Maguire were two of the finest country forwards at that time.

The player you probably thinking about was a Balmain junior and boxer, Bruce Parnell, who again was and outstanding running second row forward. He was hard to tell about from Sirro apart from being a bit more slim line. A real shame because he was a first grader and his broken leg was a very bad.

Good memories! I remember the ground announcer asking for Mr Roach to come to the Balmain dressing room (probably to calm Blocker down).

Yeah, it was Parnell who was a real good hard player and much better at that point than Sirro who bloomed late for mine.

Parnell was an outstanding junior and i remember when he was carried off at Belmore and i still believe we lost the best 2nd rower we could hope for.Football can be a very cruel sport you are always only 1 tackle away from having your career finished

Back in the late 60's a young star prop was brought up by Saint George,( Icant remember his name)
Might have been Kevin someone, I think it was a big game Semis or final.
He was bashed out of the game. -and his first grade career was over.
It's a different game these days, and while Forwards don't have to worry about being bashed out of the game , a lot come into first grade much younger than players in those days normally did.
If he gets a few runs in a few games it won't take long to see if he can handle it or not.

That other players may have been Kevin Gibson.

Yeah I can remember a few blokes from my old Brisbane Wests sides in the 70's who had serious knee injuries and were never the same afterwards

Rod Bradshaw and Wayne Carr were two that readily come to mind

Before some thinks Carr is made up he was Norm Carr's brother and he played for Qld before SOO as a 5/8

Andrew Tessman was another from the late 80's who suffered a serious leg injury when he was hit by a car leaving Expo , I was probably standing maybe 40 metres away when it happened , the noise of the collision and his screams I don't forget readily

He was never the same and had lost all his mobility by the time he made it to the Broncs

I too still think a damn good one was lost that day, though can't remember it being at Belmore, but life was a party and bit of a substance cocktail for me back then, so could have been anywhere. :sunglasses:

Bing Pringle was one of my favourites. The funniest incident was at Leichhardt against Manly at the end of Bing's career. It was a reserve grade game and a couple of players from both sides had been sent off. Pringle had the ball about 10 metres or so from the Manly try line at the south western corner of the field. When Pringle got the ball he made sure the referee was not paying attention and as the Manly player (it may have been Wayne Springall) came to tackle him (with the obligatory swinging arm) Bing hit him with a short right which sent him to the turf and Pringle strolled through to score a try, A magic moment for a very clever and underrated player,

Parnell's injury was a huge tragedy for Balmain, and we also remember Dennis Bendall and my favourite Geoff Starling, John Sparks was another outstanding Wollongong and Aust Schools product who may his way to Balmain no doubt because of Keith Barnes' links to the South Coast.

Back on topic please…

He's big, works hard, runs hard, but he's not really aggressive. He's not one to try to smash his opponent, pick fights or throw punches etc. Adding a tad more aggression would help his attack and defence, but obviously punching is just not needed these days in order to be an enforcer.

Wow can you get more Brisvegas than that… Wayne Carr and the bloke who got hit by a car outside Expo 88!

Surely the Carrs, Kerrs and Kings know by now to swear off Wayne as a boy's name, same as the Hunts avoid Michael and most people avoid Dick.

Tessman would of been as good a player as Petero Civonaceva if not for the accident

I'm sure Watto could probably back me on this

You "sure" started off boldly, then "could" have been a lot more confident in Watto, but you "probably" already realise that

Wouldn't Felise & Tatola be above him in the pecking order? This may be a year to learn by bouncing between NYC and NSW cup

Felise definitely and probably Tatola, plus throw Esan Marsters and Bayley Sironen into the mix as well. Plenty of talent and plenty of competition for spots to motivate these guys makes for a promising mix.

I watched the Balmain SG Ball team play the competition leaders the Sharks at Woolooware last year. The game ended in a draw which was an outstanding result and Moses Suli stood out lie a beacon. Ryan Pappenhuyzen didn't play that day but Balmain had an outstanding second row forward by the name of Alex Seyfarth. A good build over six feet tall, high workrate and willing to get involved in the physical confrontations. He scored a good try and I remember a couple of friends (Sharks supporters) being very impressed with him and Suli. I know he is in SG Ball again this year but looks a fine prospect,
