Pat Richards Scores 30 Points For Wigan

Pat Richards enjoyed a record 30-point haul as Wigan Warriors demolished London Broncos 70-0 on Saturday to book their place in the Challenge Cup rugby league final.

Richards, who will return to the NRL's Wests Tigers next season after eight years in Europe, crossed for two tries and kicked 11 goals as Wigan, from English rugby league's north-west heartland, ran riot in a semi-final that will do little to promote the 13-man code as a national game in Britain.

Wigan returned Sam Tomkins, Sean O'Loughlin and Auckland-born Harrison Hansen to their starting line-up, having rested the trio in the Super League defeat by arch-rivals St Helens.

For the Londoners, Jamie Soward slotted in at scrum-half after sitting out the loss at Widnes a week ago.

Wigan had trounced the Broncos 64-6 and 48-18 in their two Super League meetings this season and entered Saturday's semi-final as overwhelming favourites.

Even more so considering it was the Warriors' 45th appearance at this stage of the competition, while the men from the British capital were making just their third semi-final, their first since 1999.

The course of the match was set in the 11th minute when Darrell Goulding ghosted through a huge gap in the Broncos defence.

Richards then missed a long-range penalty before Wigan breached the Broncos' defence for the second time midway through the first half, Matt Smith teeing up Lee Mossop to crash over from close range.

Tomkins danced through just three minutes later.

A fourth try came in the 28th minute, Australian Blake Green pouncing after Smith's kick through rebounded off the post.

Tries from Richards and Josh Charnley made for a 34-0 lead at the break and Scott Taylor muscled over to push Wigan to the 40-point mark in the 49th minute.

By now it was simply a case of how many, Smith next on the scoresheet and Richards then adding his second in the corner after a stunning flick pass from O'Loughlin as Wigan went 52-0 ahead.

Richards then turned provider, offloading for Liam Farrell to bustle over when he could easily have scored himself.

Iain Thornley added the 11th try when he broke through another huge gap and Charnley crossed for his second six minutes from time.

Was a bit weary about his signing when they announced it ( even though he is a champion) I was sceptical about how old he will be when he joins us but since then he can't keep out of the news with his great performances in SL, so now I can't wait till he joins us

Hurry up Mr Richards we have missed you. Sounds like Soward has not improved

I doubt we can judge Soward by his performances with the current Dragons team or the current London Broncos team. Both are absolutely terrible

Best field goal ever last week.
30 points this week (2 tries 11 goals)
I think he is gonna be great for us next year.

Because with lote the Fijians will come. But I agree no place for him anymore in the side. Perhaps part of the coaching staff somewhere.

That right foot of Pat's will be more than handy from the sound of it.

Starting to see a log-jam in the outside backs next season…

Richards, Lawrence, Lulai, Koro, Nofo, Simona, Lote,,,,7 into 4 doesn't add up....and while experience is good, at what point is it holding back the youngsters, who have all looked up to 1st grade in their time on the field?

I don't want to cast dispersions on Pattys performances , but the ESL and NRL are poles apart and many of the bottom tier Super League teams would struggle to beat NSW Cup sides

Things do look good , but time will tell once Richards has played half a dozen NRL games

what he is doing is showing consistent performance every week.something our kids need to lead them.
out leaping players under bombs is a patty thing, kicking 65 yard drop outs is a patty thing, finishing off the work inside is a patty thing.nothing to do with the comp he plays in.

now if people are expecting long range breaks from him, well that isn't a patty thing,

every game i have watched him this year all i think of is pro,

So by my calculations he kicked 11/12 which is pretty damn good. Being 8 points behind or even 2 points behind from missed conversions is enough to panic a side like ours but if we get those conversions then it would be much better. Benji's kicking in 2012 and early 2013 was ok (better than it used to be) but Patty looks to be vastly superior.
