Off-contract Wests Tigers winger Pat Richards said his age - he's 33 - shouldn't be a factor in any negotiations he'll have with the club's management when he tries to strike a new deal.
>
"I still laugh about it," said Richards of rugby league's age-old age debate. "Some blokes could be finished at 28, it really depends on the player's body. Someone like a Paul Gallen [who, at 33, wants a new deal at Cronulla] hasn't dropped off - as I said, it's all about the body. We're preparing a lot better these days, they're looking after us a lot better with sports science and the recovery sessions. I'm feeling good and if I keep playing well - and the body stays fresh - I'd love to go around again."
>
Richards, who scored a try off that Benji Marshall flick pass in the Wests Tigers 2005 grand final victory before he joined the English Super League where he played 224 games for Wigan, declared his intention to play on after producing a man-of-the-match performance in last weekend's 22-6 victory over Parramatta on the weekend
>
He managed a miraculous general play kick against the Eels - his 100th NRL appearance - as he was being tackled over the sideline that resulted in a breath-taking four-pointer to fullback James Tedsco hailed the freakiest try you could hope to see.
>
While the hit-out against Parramatta was consistent with the form he's displayed since he returned from England last year Richards, who represented Ireland in seven Tests, said injuries were probably his only hope of making his State of Origin debut for NSW.
>
"If it [a call from Blues coach Laurie Daley] came it'd be great, but I'm sure it won't," Richards said before training on Wednesday. "I suppose if a few more fall over … but who knows? It's not really on my radar at the moment. I'm trying to play well for the Tigers."
>
Wests Tigers forward Martin Taupau was one teammate happy to urge the club's management to draw up a fresh contract for the goalkicking finisher, saying he added invaluable confidence to the NRL's youngest line-up.
>
""The older Patty gets the smarter and better he gets as a footballer," said Taupau. "I'm just glad he's on our side. I'd like to see him [signed] for a few more years. He adds a lot, he's got that spark. Everytime he pulls on the jersey you know he's capable of doing something special."
>
Second-rower Curtis Sironen was as emphatic about the need to keep Richards, saying he considered him to be a player who could make the seemingly impossible happen. "We love Patty, he's a legend," Sironen said. "He's one of those blokes who can pull [the kick for Tedesco's try] out of his arse and just be so cool, calm and humble about it. It's awesome to have a senior player like him on the wing; he kicks goals and does all those things we need."
>
Sironen also insisted a birth certificate shouldn't be used to judge the value of a player. "The way he interacts with the boys you wouldn't know he's one of the oldest," he said of Richards. "'He's there mucking around with us all and I'm very grateful he's one of our teammates.

Who cares about a birth certificate,Patty is 33yrs old and still an absolute asset to the WTs…
He deserves another year with us,he is such a confidence booster to our young players and still can compete well....

He has earned another year, and he is still up to it.......

Yeah good article Kul
Write Richards off at your own Peril some of you Wests Tigers Forumers ? But he is invaluable to our side , i was right in line with that kick off he did that Hopoate dropped and it was unbelievable to watch the ball in the air .
He is cool under pressure with a great know how in certain situations , keeps us in the games with his goals from the sidelines .
Pat Richards is a Legend , wish he never left to England in the 1st place.

I feel people discriminate him because of his age on here… If he was 25 and playing the exact same then people wouldn't be chopping him.

Happy you could dine with him….you could "buy one get one free"together...

He wouldn't need the discount card,he deserves a free meal for his services to the club...

I think we should judge him on his performances towards the end of the year. That is when we will know if his body can handle it.

Too early. I put up a pole early last yr after a few wins asking if Potter should be re-signed and about 70% of the forum said he should be. A few bad losses and the hero can become public enemy no 1\. As Tony said, judge him after a full season, not a month. His body feels good now, lets see how it feels in 4 months.

Yeah he's a winger for crying out loud and he played several years in the ESL - his body has hardly taken any punishment  He could probably play until he's 40!

Robbie is the same age, plays in the middle in a key position and has been in the NRL comp all his career - we should be marveling at the things he does every week, at his age.

We can actually thank Brian Noble the former England coach for ensuring that Pat is in such Tip Top condition in this day and age, Noble was the Wigan coach at the time when Pat left the Tigers and somehow he didn't rate Pat as a player and wouldn't select him in the Firsts side.
Well look at how history rates player and coach, Pat goes on to play 226 top grade games for Wigan, after they punted Noble and now Pat is becoming a legend 'all over again' back at the Tigers and it's a case of Brian Who?…...........

Too early IMO. Our wing depth at present is not what I consider to be great so I'm certainly open to the idea, but Hoeter has shown he is certainly capable and Nofoaluma, provided he can stay on the field is certainly quality. Aside from that, we lack decent wing options so Richards might be worth 1 more year if he stays injury free.

TOO SLOWa

Yep. Mind you he hasn't been poor this year and I thought he would be pretty ordinary. I'd like more speed out wide but if the team is playing well all over the park maybe we can keep him there.

You're right. I thought Hoeter was very good.

Watching Hopoate drop that ball was SWEET..
Thank you Patty!

There are two categories in today's game
Footballers and athletes
Patty is definitely a footballer
What he lacks in "speed" he makes up for in positional play, defensive reads, goal kicking, strong dummy half runs, best kickoff in the comp, huge touch finders, field goals and he can score a try…ranked second currently
But speed that's what we need because this is a track and field event yeah right haha

i definitely think he needs to chime in a bit more with our fifth tackle kicks. brooks has been somewhat ineffective with his bombs.

if reynolds can do it at souths and pat can do it from kickoffs why aren't we attempting these floating and torpedo bombs that are very difficult to catch?

Pat played a bit of fullback and centre while in the ESL Flip
