What it all should come down to in the end is cheating- match fixers, spot fixers and drug cheats should all be banned for life. The major issue is some people guilty of cheating got 3 week bans (and eventually won a premiership), whereas another cheat gets the book thrown at him and probably banned forever. That is the issue.
Anyone who doesn't think that the NRL are more interested in protecting their affiliation with a money-spinning golden goose than actually dealing appropriately with ALL forms of cheating have their heads buried up their blurter.
Here it is…...Simona went against all NRL and club rules by gambling on NRL first and foremost...doesn't matter the size of the bets ....they get lectures and taught from the moment they get into the NRL system that punting on NRL is a no no ...he was stupid to even entertain the idea let alone think he would get away with it...disappointing ,,yes but most of all he cast doubt on his team mates,something you learn when playing the game that you stick solid with your teammates and don't let them down...therein lies his MISTAKE...

Its hard to put into words what he was trying to say and not come off as soft on some forms of cheating as opposed to others….that said, I agree with the principle of what he is saying.
Match fixers destroy the sport. Whenever something remarkable happens you have that nagging thought in the back of your mind that its a setup. That takes away the spontaneous enjoyment of seeing an athlete, footballer, team do something amazing. Which negates the need for you to watch it live. After a while you only take a passing interest.
All cheats are scum but matchfixers are top of the crap heap and if Tim did do this then the life ban is required.

Sport is built on the idea that you can't predict the outcome and all parties are doing everything they can to win. The minute this becomes in doubt, whether fixing or fraud or tanking, the whole concept of sport falls apart.
It's like the day when you turn 9 and someone tells you that wrestling is staged, and for a lot of people that takes away most of the fun. It becomes more like a movie than a sport, and obviously there's no betting.
Just look at how aggressive cricket was towards match-fixing and how badly that tarnished the sport and reputations of certain players/countries. Tell me, for instance, that nobody thinks of match fixing when the Pakistan cricket team gets mentioned.

The Lance Armstrong comparison probably isn't the best, TDF cyclists are all on something. They need to be, it's the most grueling sporting event in the world. Lance would have won regardless.

Jirskyr, maybe 99% of the wrestling was staged but I saw "professor" Tanaka deliver a deliberate karate type elbow to the top of head and the guy shed tonnes of blood running down his body and all over the canvas - he always had his bandaged up and did not fight until about 6 weeks later. (I got free front row seats to most stadium events)
Domestic abuse, drug use, violent crime - punishment for them is down to the judicial system and the laws of the land. Should they be stricter - maybe, but that's not the point.
Betraying your team, your sport and the fans is appropriately punished by the game - and betting on yourself to lose is as low as that gets. A life ban is completely appropriate.
(& yes there is crossover with performance enhancing drugs/ gambling laws etc but the point still stands)

This whole discussion seems a bit daft to me. It's like if Kent had said cutting off someone's hand is worse than cutting off someone's foot and we'd all started debating it. It's a meaningless distinction - they're both really bad, who cares if one is slightly worse than the other.
If anyone who actually read my post can point out where I said Simona's actions were no worse than players taking P.E. drugs, then show me! No where have I even attempted to 'rank' the various forms of cheating. What I was taking umbrage with was Paul Kent's argument that taking P.E. drugs was understandable and by some figment of his imagination, O.K, because they were just trying to improve themselves.
So please don't accuse me of suggesting that Simona is no worse than the cheats at Cronulla, or Jared Mullen or anyone else. I never said that. What I said was whether his actions were worse or not was a matter of opinion. I never expressed my opinion on this.

He'd likely have spread the bets across many accounts, ones "owned" by his friends etc. So it's hard to say exactly what he was getting out of it, but you would think it would be worthwhile.

It validated nothing. You reckon taking PE drugs just to be able to take the next step to compete is acceptable. Nice work! A bloke who cheats to make a living from the game is OK?
