Paul Kent - 'Take a flamethrower to the roster'

We need 30 players in our roster,Madge and the club have actively tried to recruit a few marquee players only to miss out. So than he has been forced to the next tier down to try and fix our roster short falls. That makes the rebuild slower and more unpredictable. The one thing they are not doing, is saddling us with long over priced contracts for footballer well beyond their glory days.

I also think if PV ball is here to stay, that changes everything, as it requires a different style of footballer. You need forwards like Martin from Penrith and Smith from the Storm and of speed right across the park. So maybe our roster will need a major work over.

Capewell almost literally told WT to get lost a few years ago when we enquired. He is not interested in us, nor should we be in him.

He met with the Tigers twice & his Penrith deal included 3rd party sponsors which equated to the same value. He is worth more than $250,000 especially considering what the Tigers are paying Smoking Joe.

I've hardly heard any negative comments around our recruitment when it has occurred. This team is better personnel-wise and has improved with some great trades and pick-ups.

Our true power is only going to come from pathways and holding onto talent. This stretches back to JT. If he was never given the reins and we were the club we are now, then maybe we would still have Tapau, JAC, Ted, Moses etc. It takes time to bring back top-tier talent like that when you're not winning.

It seems like that pathway was disregarded for a while and is now only being built back up. I point my finger to Pascoe for that. It's unacceptable that it was left to flounder.

That's where the accountability needs to sit. Not madge who is making every attempt to take a long-term focus.

To me it seems like we have the players to support 2 or 3 marquee players really well.

Our issue is we haven’t been able to attract the main event players a team needs to compete.

Add Tedesco, Moses and say Pangai or Grant to this team and we are a different beast.

We tried to get star power with Latrell and Addo Carr, but it didn’t happen.

We’ll land a star eventually. Just need to be patient.

The Douihei, Laurie type signings are where we have our most success.

Few years ago when we got Blake Austin, Martin Taupau and Kevin Naiqama

If we can identify talents like this, ready for FG but stuck behind current players... we should make our moves.

A quick browse and these names look promising

Rocco Berry (NZ) ( @TheDaBoss suggestion)
Isaac Lumemele (Melb)
Billy Magoulias (Sharks)
Sione Katoa (Sharks)
Isaac Liu (roosters)
Seb Kris (Canberra)
Harley Smith-Shields (Canberra)
Hudson Young (Canberra)
Will Penisini (Eels)
Haze Dunster (Eels)
James Roumanus (Bulldogs)
Reounf Atoni (Bulldogs)

Just a few names.

Yes Madge made many of the signings.

But if the salary cap hadn't already been nuked by Cleary before he got here, he would have been able to make *different* signings.

Can you not see that the mere presence of Packer's, Reynolds' and Mbye's contracts has determined the kind of additional signings that can be made?

Would he, he had over a million for Latrell, so the no money doesn't wash with me, he had money, but he couldn't land a player of note

If you add Packer's salary onto what we were already offering Lattrell or JAC, there is no way they would have gone elsewhere, nobody rejects that sort of money (not suggesting we should have literally offered that much)

And of that lot, very few really missed. Arguably Corey Thompson and Momorovski. Farah was literally on his last legs, Marshall a shadow of his brilliant best. Matterson good but a grub- no loss there. Cleary really didnt recruit much talent did he- olduns past their best hoping for instant success.

Queensland just lost 50-6.

Might need more than one flamethrower.

Don't tell anyone about Titans or Broncos or Cowboys or Warriors or Knights or Raiders either. All of these sides have had 40 or more put on them at least once the past 4 weeks, and half of those sides had a bye during this period.

only 7 of the squad were from before Madges time... whos responsible here?

The players.

Makes you wonder why he signed them?

I think you need to understand how the process here works? If you are interested, google Adam Hartigan's story about joining the WT's, probably around the pre-season, it explains it quite well, it is also on here, but couldn't tell you where?

So he's not responsible for recruitment or the poor performances on the field. What is he responsible for?

hes not responsible for anything, he is truly untouchable and none of the clubs results from this year or the two years prior have anything to do with him, didnt you know?

It would seem so, good old Teflon

The thing is, you have to have 30 players on the books. You have to make choices. Madge was set a task to rebuild after the joint was practically burnt to the ground. To get to the 30, he signed a couple of stop gaps that may or may not have worked, ie: BJ, JTJ, etc. His priority signings were AD, DL, Simpkin, Simpkins, Blore and all the other 19 and 20 year olds who will be stars ( hopefully ) in a year or two ( or three ). Look at the improvement in Seyfarth from last season. Tamou is here for two years to help those guys along. Good move. Joffa is also a great signing, experience and grit for low dollars. Madge has a modicum of patience, unlike most forumers, and confidence in his long term plan. The team he won the comp with at Souths was built around two stars in Sam Burgess and Greg Inglis, but Adam Reynolds was only a two season veteran, Dylan Walker season and a half, Johston, Gray, Koriasu rookies....he know's how to put a side together.

The game has changed immensely since then, Madge hasn't, and we are seeing the results of that now, and what about after he won the premiership, his popularity and win rate went south, real fast

That’s why when I read comments about Madge re signing players that many say are “his signings” I also think in some cases it might well be the lesser of two evils. At the end of the day we have to spend the cap and we have to have the squad filled by a point in time. Doesn’t make it anymore palatable though as a long suffering supporter.

Well not all signings are 100% Madge's either. What I mean is, he isn't the only guy scouting and talking to players, putting names forward, signing off on the deals.

There is a recruitment committee and my understanding is the coach can be... well not over-ruled exactly... but strongly encouraged to accept a player being signed. I don't know for a fact if Madge has ever objected to a signing.

The fundamental argument about "Madge's" roster is like a divorced housewife - you make financial decisions based on your current circumstances. So a housewife who forgoes salary to maintain the house and raise kids can't suddenly be criticised if she breaks up with her husband and doesn't have a reliable income. Similarly, Madge is still financially hamstrung by the decisions made by his predecessors, and you have to consider that in the context of every signing Tigers have made during his tenure. Packer and Mbye alone are in the realm of $1.5M+ still on the cap.

Not only that, an additional $320K stripped off the 2019 and 2020 cap because of Faragate.

But Hooper, Weidler, etc...
How do they get on?

Get paid to do what, we do, on the forum essential... write down their thoughts and feelings and some other rumours and garbage.

Hooper is one of the most unlikeable guys around yet his head keeps popping up everywhere.

He probably has a journalism degree but why does anyone care what he has to say, over some one like.... @BAGNF05 or @gallagher ?

Mind boggling.

The players most responsible for the continued poor attitude and culture of this club are not on Maguire . He is just stupid enough to think he can coach them be better than who they actually are.

Maguire can coach players who are already bought in and professional.

He might suck at rebuilding and changing culture but its not his fault some of our most senior players go to water in the face of adversity. Thats on those players and they need to be moved on.

Then why did they extend Nofoaluma?
