Kenty is 100% correct.

The players most responsible for the continued poor attitude and culture of this club are not on Maguire . He is just stupid enough to think he can coach them be better than who they actually are.

Maguire can coach players who are already bought in and professional.

He might suck at rebuilding and changing culture but its not his fault some of our most senior players go to water in the face of adversity. Thats on those players and they need to be moved on.

Then why did they extend Nofoaluma?

No idea…..

The fact he was the winger of the year in the comp and didn’t get a look at origin should have indicated something.

Maumalo isn’t looking promising either.

My god we suck

Can you not see that the mere presence of Packer's, Reynolds' and Mbye's contracts has determined the kind of additional signings that can be made?

Would he, he had over a million for Latrell, so the no money doesn't wash with me, he had money, but he couldn't land a player of note

If you add Packer's salary onto what we were already offering Lattrell or JAC, there is no way they would have gone elsewhere, nobody rejects that sort of money (not suggesting we should have literally offered that much)

You wanted to offer Latrell about 1.5 to 1.7 million a season ......

"Journalists" like Paul Kent are just wanna be ex-NRL somebodies. But in reality, he's a nuffie, nobody, never was. Why does his opinion even matter to people?

I always wonder how some of these guys get their start...

I know Kentys resume and how he interviewed people in the sheds for years and worked his way up....

But Hooper, Weidler, etc...
How do they get on?

Get paid to do what, we do, on the forum essential... write down their thoughts and feelings and some other rumours and garbage.

Hooper is one of the most unlikeable guys around yet his head keeps popping up everywhere.

He probably has a journalism degree but why does anyone care what he has to say, over some one like.... @BAGNF05 or @gallagher ?

Mind boggling.

I did work experience with Steve Mascord (previously at the SMH) almost 30 years ago. Really great guy. His advice to me was, if I was genuine about being a sports journalist, was to do as much free work as I could as a young fellow and build my CV. For example, he said global agencies like Reuters were usually interested in niche news if they didn't have to pay much (or anything) for it, so you could cover local carnivals, maybe get a few gigs with local or country radio stations etc. That is what he did; basically cover as much footy as you could for free and then once you had a bit of a portfolio and done some networking, see if anyone was interested in hiring you.

Now, being a 15 year old punk I nodded along and promptly ignored what he said. I was also still buzzing too much from having just met Mal Meninga - he had just launched his book. I was also soon to find out that journalism pays rather poorly.

So like Paul Kent, I imagine any of those guys licked boots for a long period before eventually working or snaking their way up the ladder, building contacts, massaging the truth, ringing people all day (in the old days) then text messaging all day (recently) then whatsapping all day (modern) to try and cultivate a story. Making friends with the right people who would help them get more prominent opportunities.

And because Fox Sports and Channel 9 need to create cheap local content for their channels, horse-headed schmos like Hooper and Weedler get a run on telly. In the old days they'd have been stuck behind a desk pushing pencils.

This is Maguires team these are the players he wanted ..no beating around the bush after 3 seasons this team is not a scratch on the one he took over and we seen how well coached and presented the team was on Saturday night !
A new coach needs to be put in place for 2022 before any more dud signings are made .

It’s not the players he wanted ..
I’m sure he’d of liked much better players. But unfortunately our roster are the only players Madge and the club could attract .

I reckon that’s spot on. You can only give money to people willing to take it.
I think there’s probably plan A, B, C and D and we’re probably operating around the C level in terms of the calibre of players who agree to sign. That’s why when I read comments about Madge re signing players that many say are “his signings” I also think in some cases it might well be the lesser of two evils. At the end of the day we have to spend the cap and we have to have the squad filled by a point in time. Doesn’t make it anymore palatable though as a long suffering supporter.

some good common sense points.
so many people say just sign smith/fifita/jac like it's a foregone conclusion that if we offer enough money they'll play for us but it really isn't that simple, and if it was then are they the types of players we want at our club because the first sniff of more money (matterson/aloiai) they're unhappy and out the door.
we need to build that culture that makes people want to play for us, and unfortunately it won't happen overnight or with high priced veterans. we need a good core group of young goers that play for each other not an oversized pay packet.

Mind boggling.

I'm a journo myself, in the architecture and design industry. there's jobs here and there and I got one 6 months out of graduating last year, but sport is legitimately a bottleneck when it comes to covering it. these guys like Buzz, Kent, Hadley, Crawley, Read, Webster etc have literally been around for years, and will remain so. these guys have been around since the days when newspapers were king, and have been able to carry on with their work into TV, mainstream radio and the column spaces available in the back pages.

to get a gig it's very much being patient and covering the articles that the 'pundits' don't want to cover and building your contact base. there isn't too many young guys around that aren't in the mainstream sectors that haven't been there for 5+ years. Nick Campton is the best of them and is a great writer, but he's been around for a fair amount of time.

the best journos in rugby league aren't even working for the mainstream outlets. guys like The Rugby League Eye Test, RL Writers, Hello Sport, Pythago RL, Steve Mascord, list goes on. very difficult to get a gig these days and I changed my trajectory because of it, unless you're willing to put the time and do it off your own back.

I don’t think there are many great players out there. I see to many athletes and bot enough footballers. Robots and cyborgs.

The problem is we keep picking / adding blokes with fundamental flaws.

Nofa can't read D...Ferguson did the same things for Parra, got dropped and now being pushed out...whilst Nofa gets four more years and a golden pass saying automatic selection.

Big Luc can't move at speed / can't get up and down quick enough to defend on the line. He is first bloke picked and his edge first to fold...every week...automatic selection.

Just so many more also...we need actual 'complete' players without gaping flaws.

When the SOO series sits at 76 -0 and one club has seven representatives - the talent pool is looking thin. Every club know what they need to be better it's just not readily available.

only 7 of the squad were from before Madges time... whos responsible here?

The players.

Makes you wonder why he signed them?

I think you need to understand how the process here works? If you are interested, google Adam Hartigan's story about joining the WT's, probably around the pre-season, it explains it quite well, it is also on here, but couldn't tell you where?

So he's not responsible for recruitment or the poor performances on the field. What is he responsible for?

hes not responsible for anything, he is truly untouchable and none of the clubs results from this year or the two years prior have anything to do with him, didnt you know?

The thing is, you have to have 30 players on the books. You have to make choices. Madge was set a task to rebuild after the joint was practically burnt to the ground. To get to the 30, he signed a couple of stop gaps that may or may not have worked, ie: BJ, JTJ, etc. His priority signings were AD, DL, Simpkin, Simpkins, Blore and all the other 19 and 20 year olds who will be stars ( hopefully ) in a year or two ( or three ). Look at the improvement in Seyfarth from last season. Tamou is here for two years to help those guys along. Good move. Joffa is also a great signing, experience and grit for low dollars. Madge has a modicum of patience, unlike most forumers, and confidence in his long term plan. The team he won the comp with at Souths was built around two stars in Sam Burgess and Greg Inglis, but Adam Reynolds was only a two season veteran, Dylan Walker season and a half, Johston, Gray, Koriasu rookies....he know's how to put a side together.

Well written TB - agree with your summery 100%.

only 7 of the squad were from before Madges time... whos responsible here?

Your job as a coach is primarily a man manager, to get the best out of the players and ensure success on the field

You can blame the players, but the coach is responsible for their attitude, he has assembled them, he is responsible for their performance

What a load of RUBBISH!

The players are responsible for their own attitude, nobody else. If they won't buy in to what the club, coach and the team are trying to achieve, you cannot change it. You have to get rid of the ones that won't.

Eg. Latrine would not buy in to what Freddy and NSW where doing a couple of years ago - he was dropped.
Last year he did not play.
This year in his own words "I have bought into what Freddy and the NSW team are doing" ....

Attitude is all on the player.

When the SOO series sits at 76 -0 and one club has seven representatives - the talent pool is looking thin. Every club know what they need to be better it's just not readily available.

6 of those blokes debuted at penrith. Lazy or poorly run clubs not developing is the problem.

That is 2/3rd's of of the roster torched..Not sure what Kent is on about..

I think what Kenty is saying is we need a bigger torch

What he should do - is do us all a favor and turn the flamethrower on himself.

As good a League journalist as he was a player.

Nothing worse than a nobody, who thinks he is a somebody.
