Payten: I was proud and relieved
Under 20s Coach Todd Payten said he was “proud and relieved” after Saturday’s thrilling 28-22 win over the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium.
The win now puts his team in next Sunday’s Toyota Cup Grand Final against the Canberra Raiders who beat the Dragons in their Preliminary Final.
Wests Tigers ran out to a 28-10 lead however the Roosters surged back into the match with two converted tries in 10 minutes.
Payten admitted that it felt like a very long last quarter of an hour.
“We knew they’d come back. It was just some silly pushed passes, a couple of drop balls, penalties that let them get back into the game. In the end we just held on,” he said.
“I’m proud and relieved. I was a bit nervous coming to the game knowing that they’d beaten us convincingly twice but I knew with the week we had at training that we were ready.
Despite the last ditch onslaught from the Roosters, Payten was confident his team had the superior fitness and commitment to hang on in defence.
“We always knew it was going to be an 80 minute game. We (Me and the Coaching staff) have continually talked to them all year about turning up for each other, pushing each other when you get tired and no short cuts in defence.
“I don’t mind if you take a blow when we’ve got the ball but you don’t take a blow when they’ve got the ball.”
