PAYTEN PRAISED AS A READING CAPTAIN
30/03/2011 5:52:02 PM
Wests Tigers prop Todd Payten has been praised for his work off the field as a reading ambassador for children.
An avid reader of novels, Payten is always willing to give his time and has played a major role in helping young kids develop their reading skills over the past few years.
Through his role as Wests Tigers Reading Captain, Todd writes a piece in the NRL Rugby League Reads resources which goes out to around 700 schools nationwide 3 times a year. The Reading Captains share their reading habits and attitudes towards reading, recommended texts for students to read and set reading challenges.
Research has shown that this aspect of the magazine had a profound impact on students in schools. The majority of students, fans and non fans, stated that they increased their voluntary reading due to the Reading Captains’ challenges, recommendations or comments.
Teachers also valued the use of First Grade Rugby League players as reading role models claiming that the messages of these players shifted attitudes to reading, but also encouraged students to read more in their spare time.
Parent Robert Mantellato wrote to the Club expressing his thanks for the fantastic educational program.
“Several weeks ago, a family friend of mine contacted the Wests Tigers wanting to obtain information about the program,’’ Robert wrote.
“The Club provided sample books and magazines detailing the entire program. I am glad to say that this information has been forwarded to my son’s school’s P & C so that funding can be sourced to purchase such a fantastic initiative.
“Wests Tigers also provided a signed football, about 15 player magnets and a Balmain Tigers cap for my son Ethan, who is a mad supporter. This was totally unexpected and a welcome bonus as these items are being used as rewards. I am proud to say that his interest and motivation in wanting to read has increased two fold over the past 2-3 weeks.
“An additional magazine was also provided - signed by Todd Payten which contained a great motivational quote.
“Too much negativity has been directed towards football teams and players over the past weeks, months and years which overshadows the hard work and dedication that players like Todd display within the community.
“ I encourage Wests Tigers to continue supporting this program as the benefits are for our children now and for the future.”
